An employer may argue - and many do - that his or her business would be better off by bringing a foreign worker into the country rather than hiring an American with little work history and few signs of a good work ethic. The foreign worker, the employer argues, will be more productive and reliable. Why shouldn't the business bypass the American?
Perhaps the best answer to that question is another: What happens to a society when the government makes it easy to avoid hiring from its own workforce?

Employers bypass domestic workers for alternatives who are deemed more efficient for their business models. But society is still left with the abandoned workers. An immigration policy that spurs investment in American workers is going to be beneficial for the nation. That is what Barbara Jordan was fighting for during her final act of patriotic service to her country. She was defeated in her quest only by her untimely death. America would be a different place today had she lived and prevailed.
