Public Description:
The bill would require the President to submit plans to Congress to accelerate the processing of Iraqi nationals’ petitions for refugee status, as well as the operation of the special immigrant visa program for Iraqi and Afghan translators; would require the President to submit to Congress legislative proposals to facilitate greater “acceptance by,” “relocation,” or “absorption into” the United States of Iraqis seeking admission into, or resettlement in, the United States due to a well-founded fear of persecution on account of employment by, or assistance to, the United States or other coalition county in Iraq; also would require the President to submit to Congress legislative proposals to amend the definitions of “terrorist activity” and “material support” under the Immigration and Nationality Act in order to: (1) “capture only those groups that truly threaten” homeland security; and (2) “account for actions that may have been taken under duress”; and would authorize appropriations to the State Department and to DHS, fiscal years 2008 through 2010 ($100 million per year to State, $10 million per year to DHS), to carry out the processing, relief, and resettlement in the United States of Iraqi refugees.
