2002: House Judiciary comm vote on Sensenbrenner INS reorg (HR 3231)

Voted in favor of INS restructuring bill in committee in 2002
Rep. ZZlastnameZZ voted as part of the House Judiciary Committe in favor of H.R. 3231, the Barbara Jordan Immigration Reform and Accountability Act of 2002. Introduced by Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), H.R. 3231 would have abolished the INS and instead established in the Department of Justice the Office of the Associate Attorney General for Immigration Affairs (AAGIA), headed by an Associate Attorney General for Immigration Affairs. H.R. 3231 would have separated the enforcement and benefits functions that currently both fall under the purview of the INS. H.R. 3231 would have help reduced illegal immigration that currently runs between 700,000 and 800,000 annually by increasing interior enforcement and border control. This would have been done through better tracking of visa holders in the U.S. and creation of a federal agency that is devoted enforcement of immigration laws.
