Mayor Castro: Path to Citizenship is the Compromise

During Tuesday's House Judiciary hearing, several of the GOP Republicans pursued a line of questioning with pro-amnesty witness, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, that discussed the idea of compromise especially when it comes to dealing with the 11 million illegal aliens living in the United States. Mayor Castro's response was that a path to citizenship is the compromise. His opposition to support anything short of a blanket amnesty is just one of the many road blocks standing in the way of "comprehensive immigration reform."

Tuesday was a rough day for the new face of the pro-amnesty movement. During the first House Judiciary Committee immigration hearing of the new Congressional session, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro made a passioned plea for giving amnesty to the nation's 11 million illegal aliens. But he had no answers to tough but reasonable questions from GOP Members who were open to debating a comprehensive immigration reform bill.

Very slowly, more and more Members of Congress are starting to look at the practical consequences of the Senate Gang of Eight's broad proposals for a "path to citizenship" for some 11 million illegal aliens.  Elected officials have to be forced to consider that a better phrase would be that they are being asked to provide the 11 million immigration lawbreakers a "path to welfare, chain migration and U.S. jobs," all to the detriment of American workers and taxpayers.

After a four-day gushing of praise from the mainstream media over the Gang of Eight's immigration proposal, reality is beginning to sink in. Recent stories from the Washington Post, New York Times, Politco, and CNN have a different tone, and comments made by some Gang of Eight members leave Sen. Marco Rubio with a difficult decision to make.

Change of strategy for immigration: Reform bill faces full gantlet in the Senate

Amnesty Proposals will Cost Taxpayers Trillions

Heritage Foundation policy expert, Robert Rector, is estimating that the two proposals offered by the Senate Gang of Eight and Pres. Obama earlier this week will cost taxpayers trillions of dollars. He said the proposals are similar to the failed 2007 amnesty bill, which he estimated at the time to cost $2.5 trillion in Medicare and Social Security alone.

Rosemary Jenks, director of governmental relations for the Numbers USA, a group that favors tightening immigration restrictions, said the same popular rebellion that deadlocked Congress over Bush's immigration proposal also will stop Obama's, regardless of demographic trends and the November's election results. She noted that some Democrats, too, oppose a big bill.

"It's going to be the same Republicans on the amnesty side and the same Democrats on our side," she said.
