Durbin: Immigration bill 'unlikely' in '10
Durbin said that a tough political environment, especially for Republicans, made it all but politically impossible to move forward with an immigration bill.
Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are divided over the timing of an Amnesty bill in Congress. While some feel now is the time to push for an Amnesty for the nation's 11-18 million illegal aliens, other Members of the Caucus feel the timing is bad with mid-term elections coming in the fall.
Yesterday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) took the extraordinary step of writing a letter to Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, asking her to delay implementation of Arizona’s new immigration law in order to give the Senate a chance to pass comprehensive immigration reform. The Governor’s quick reply: “No.” Sen. Schumer’s letter, combined with other actions by previously pro-amnesty Senators, shows that Schumer and his cronies are running scared because the American people are about to get the chance to see that Attrition Through Enforcement works.
The Obama Administration announced today that it is extending Temporary Protected Status for illegal aliens from Nicaragua and Honduras who are living in the United States. TPS for those nations was supposed to expire in July, but the Administration is extending the deadline for two more years. Rep. Lamar Smith spoke out against the decision.
A new USA Today/Gallup poll reveals that two-thirds of Americans want the federal government to do a better job of securing the border. Eighty-four percent of Americans worry that illegal immigration strains social services, and 77% believe that illegal aliens drive down wages.
These marches today are supposed to be part of an international day of protest for better worker rights. But the ones in the U.S. mainly are pushing for de facto open borders that would drive our U.S. workers' wages down toward global averages. Thus, these marchers are not pro-workers but want the same thing as the greediest, most abusive of business interests. It can be a little disconcerting to see all those news reports this weekend of tens of thousands (perhaps hundreds of thousands) of illegal aliens and their friends marching openly in the streets demanding rewards for breaking immigration laws. But take it from somebody who has been working full-time for the opposite cause since 1991 that the noise in the streets isn't the sound that matters in politics.
Tea Party leaders have decided to use their activists to fight the Senate Amnesty bill unveiled yesterday afternoon by Majority Leader Harry Reid, Sen. Chuck Schumer, and four other Democratic Senators. The move contradicts the position of Dick Armey whose FreedomWorks organization helped spur the Tea Party movement.
Most mainstream media are reporting with a straight face that Sen. Reid's new amnesty outline is primarily an enforcement bill that wouldn't allow legalization of illegal aliens until our borders are secure. This is such a farce on several fronts, as I noted on PBS NewsHour tonight. The "Democrats-only" bill would IMMEDIATELY give 11-19 million illegal aliens the legal right to live in the U.S. and to hold a U.S. job. IMMEDIATELY!
Former Rep. Nathan Deal (R-Ga.), who resigned his seat earlier this year to focus on running for governor in Georgia, said he supports Arizona's new immigration enforcement bill, and if elected, he'll bring it to Georgia.
Pres. Obama met briefly with reporters last night and said there might not be "the appetite" for immigration reform this year. His comments came on the same day the Senate Democrats circulated an Amnesty proposal. Later today, Majority Leader Harry Reid will unveil an Amnesty plan during a press conference.
In an effort led by Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Senators Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), and Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), Senate Democrats are moving towards an Amnesty bill without Republican support. A 26-page outline was circulated today, detailing an Amnesty plan that is similar to the one first released by Senators Schumer and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) a few weeks ago.
Sen Lindsey Graham, the lone Republican working with Sen. Charles Schumer in the drafting of an Amnesty bill, said this weekend that he thinks the process needs to slow down. The Democratic Leadership, led by Pres. Obama, is looking to accelerate legislation in the aftermath of Arizona's new immigration enforcement law.
Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), who serves as the top Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, issued a statement today, critical of recent suggestions that the Senate may take up immigration reform in the coming months. Sen. Sessions said that an amnesty would undermine the employment chances of the 25 million Americans looking for full-time work.
Arizona's tough illegal immigration bill hasn't been signed into law yet by Gov. Jan Brewer, but Hispanic Leaders in the House are urging Pres. Barack Obama to block the bill if she does sign it into law. Led by Reps. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) say the federal government holds the power when it comes to immigration enforcement.
I received 10 emails from NumbersUSA members who questioned us about going to Tea Party events in Boston and Washington D.C. this week to advocate immigration reductions. We distributed 10,000 fliers (see contents below) on the High Costs of Mass Immigration, and we passed out thousands of Immigration-Reduction Report Cards across the country. While not everybody is a fan of the Tea Party efforts, I believe most of our members get the big picture that 90% of Tea Party supporters oppose illegal immigration and want to stop amnesty. Most of our members understand that to achieve our immigration goals, we need broad coalitions -- such as reaching out at Earth Day activities during the coming week.
I'm happy to report that the charges brought by pro-amnesty lawyer/mimes against my body guard have been dropped . . . Also, take a look at the Democratic Senators most on the hot seat because of Senate Majority Leader Reid's claim to have 56 Democratic votes for an amnesty.
A new CNN poll reveals that 66% of Americans don't want the federal government to make it easier for illegal aliens to earn a citizenship. Only 33% say that the United States should make it easier for illegal aliens to earn citizenship. the majority of both Democrats and Republicans say they oppose making citizenship easier.
Reading a survey mailed to me by the Democratic National Committee gives some insight into the frustration driving the thousands of illegal aliens marching in the streets against them this weekend. For all the talk by DNC leaders in favor of an amnesty, they didn't want to bring up immigration to people from whom they hoped to raise money.
With Congress still home for Spring recess and President Obama out trying to explain Health Care to the American public, the NumbersUSA Local Power Team has methodically delivered thousands of Immigration-Reduction Report Cards to grassroots activists across the country. Over the last 3 months we've updated our Report Cards that rank and grade Congress on their actions to reduce or increase overall immigration, and just recently added the ability to easily print the Report Cards for delivery to your local District Offices. We are rolling out our new campaign called “S.T.O.P. AMNESTY in 2010! Target: State by State” over the month of April. This is just the first step. The NumbersUSA Local Power Team will be attending Town Halls, protests, Earth Day events, community meetings, marches, Tea Party rallies, demonstrations, and District Offices. Print your Report Cards out here.
The NumbersUSA Local Power Team is quietly rolling out its S.T.O.P. AMNESTY in 2010! Target: State by State campaign. The Local Power Team has been out in force over the past two weeks passing out thousands of NumbersUSA Immigration-Reduction Report Cards, raising awareness, and declaring “No Amnesty!”
A new study conducted by the Public Policy Institute of California finds that immigration reform won't hurt or help the economy. The study finds that offering an amnesty to the nation's 11-18 million illegal aliens won't improve their individual financial situations.
Now that health care reform is on the books, it's time for Congress to get on with immigration reform, especially as it relates to the needs of agriculture.
During our coverage of the March for America, NumbersUSA's staff saw a number of foreign flags (and even an upside down American flag at the 19 second mark). It seems a little strange that people marching to become U.S. citizens would march with foreign flags or would mistreat Old Glory. Take a look and decide for yourself.
Roy interviews a veteran who strongly reacts to the treatment of the American flag during the "March for America."
A new poll conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and funded by the Ford Foundation attempts to debunk a poll conducted a few months ago by Zogby and the Center for Immigration Studies. I invite you to compare the questions. I think you’ll find that the Zogby poll tries to reveal people’s opinions versus the Public Religion Research poll that tries to manufacture people’s opinions.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), who has been working on a comprehensive amnesty bill with Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and President Obama, has said that there will be no chance of immigration reform this year.
Roy Beck recaps the successes of S.T.O.P. Amnesty in 4 Days and outlines what's next.
As part of S.T.O.P. Amnesty in 4 Days, Roy Beck gave a presentation to a group of House staffers on Monday, March 22, bringing the message of uncontrollable population growth, high immigration numbers and the impact of illegal immigration on America's unemployed.
Victory and success often carry complex consequences. The health care win could be prescription for Immigration Reform defeat. With 25 Million Americans out of work, Pres. Obama and Congress need to do something popular next.
Roy Beck of NumbersUSA, a group opposing illegal immigration, since February had been working with local tea party leaders across the country to disseminate a detailed fact sheet chronicling the congressional votes behind Armey’s low rating from NumbersUSA on immigration issues.
Mimes at the "March for America" rally in Washington D.C. try to prevent Roy from speaking with pro-amnesty protesters.
At the March for America, Roy explains NumbersUSA's "say no to immigrant bashing" policy. However, protesting and whistling mimes and SEIU employees attempt to disrupt his peaceful speech.
Homeland Security Assistant Inspector General Frank Deffer told Congress on Tuesday that the agency is not prepared for a mass amnesty, and Congress should consider this if and when they take up comprehensive immigration reform. Deffer called a mass amnesty "the mother of all backlogs."
Our grassroots mobilization numbers are in for last weekend, and I have no doubt that far more of you were standing up for 25 million Americans who can't find a full-time job than marchers on the National Mall demanding that the jobs stay with 8 million illegal aliens. And when we just count voters among them . . . . . .
National Public Radio covered Sunday's Pro-Amnesty "March for America", and included a few quotes from NumbersUSA CEO and Founder Roy Beck. Roy explained why NumbersUSA covered the March and offered his conjecture on what will happen with immigration reform during the next few months.
The Battle of the Mimes looks pretty silly in many ways. But beneath the makeup and balloons, the SEIU's "silencing campaign" on Sunday showed a lot about the ability and willingness of one of the biggest money/muscle partners of the pro-amnesty forces to use well-orchestrated intimidation to keep debate from happening. Perhaps surprising was that the main intent was not so much to silence me but to silence their pro-amnesty marchers. Once the Park Police finally required that the marchers be given the right to speak to us, we could see why SEIU didn't want them to be heard. Pretty radical stuff . . .
On Monday, about 45 Congressional staffers attended an immigration panel at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill. The panel was the final piece of NumbersUSA's effort to S.T.O.P. Amnesty in 4 Days.
There is ample blame to be laid at the White House door, but the 43 members of the CBC who represent largely black constituencies also bear a large share of the responsibility. While some 8 million existing U.S. jobs are estimated to be held by illegal aliens, the CBC, like Mr. Obama, has consistently opposed tough enforcement of laws against employing illegal aliens. Many of the jobs filled by illegal aliens could be filled by black Americans, especially the huge cohort of black youth who are neither in school nor part of the labor force.
