Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) has drafted a letter asking House Speaker John Boehner to make a public commitment that he will stay true to his earlier announcement to address immigration on a piece-by-piece basis. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Pres. Barack Obama, and members of the Senate Gang of Eight have all said that if the House passes any legislation, it can be used to advance the Senate-approved comprehensive amnesty bill.

Summer Recess is over and Congress is now gearing up for a busy fall schedule.  During the Congressional break, NumbersUSA activists attended over 400 town halls with nearly 150 lawmakers!  Even though we dampened the momentum for amnesty during August, we still have a lot of work ahead of us.

A wonderful story by Hope Yen of the Associated Press yesterday leveraged government data to show yet another angle of the ongoing economic situation in America. Yen painted a clear picture of what is happening across the nation, piling on statistic after hard-hitting statistic. Naturally, a mention of our historic high immigration levels was AWOL.

CIS: Biometric Exit Tracking for Foreign Visitors Feasible, Cost-Effective Now

Published:

The Center for Immigration Studies released a report confirming that a biometric exit-tracking system for foreign visitors departing by air or sea is feasible now at a reasonable cost. CIS concludes “There is thus no justification for putting off the implementation of such a system until after an amnesty” for illegal aliens, as the Senate-passed bill provides.

POLL: Catholic voters disagree with pro-amnesty bishops & see moral priority in protecting American workers

The moral arguments on immigration that Members of Congress are hearing from Catholic bishops this month are not the ones that most Catholic voters believe are the most important, according to polling of 4,967 Catholic likely voters in 26 politically competitive states.  If Catholic voters resist the political pressure from their bishops to support an amnesty, it won't be because the laity refuses to consider the moral issues of immigration but because most of the laity places a higher moral priority on protecting the most vulnerable members of their national community who are unemployed or who struggle because of low wages.

Sessions: Americans have been Sacrificed in Immigration Debate

Sen. Jeff Sessions

Published:

In an op-ed published in The Hill on Wednesday, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) detailed the impacts the Gang of Eight's immigration bill, S.744, would have on legal immigration numbers and said the interests of all Americans are be pushed aside to satisfy the interests of business and ethnic groups. Sen. Sessions urged the House to completely disavow S.744 and move forward with a plan that would "refocus the immigration debate on the rights, needs, and concerns of U.S. citizens."

Corporate Layoffs Precede Call for More Foreign Workers, Amnesty

Published:

A large number of corporations that recently laid off American workers are now urging House leaders to import more foreign workers and legalize illegal aliens, according to the Washington Examiner. Jon Feere of the Center for Immigration Studies notes, "The companies claim (immigration reform) is an 'opportunity to level the playing field for U.S. employers' but it is more of an effort to level the wages of American citizens."

Remembering 911 And Its Effect On Comprehensive Immigration Reform & Laws

For Roy Beck, president of Numbers USA, which advocates limiting immigration overall, this new focus on enforcement was a relief since it changed a growing pattern of legalization legislation. "There have been zero amnesties passed since 9/11," he says. "It may be that 9/11 did change the environment so that it became harder for Congress to continue to pass an amnesty every couple years."

‘Duck Dynasty’ drafted into amnesty campaign

Boosting the population of consumers makes short-term sense for executives, said Roy Beck, director of NumbersUSA, which is working to reduce immigration rates. “If you’ve got a rapidly growing population, then even inefficient and nonproductive businesses tend to survive,” he said.

Heavy Fall Agenda May Delay House Immigration Debate

Published:

House Republican leaders may have to delay consideration of immigration legislation, given the busy schedule that awaits the House when it reconvenes next week. In addition to debate over FY 2014 appropriations bills and a measure to raise the federal debt ceiling, a new agenda item -- military strikes in Syria -- will add to time pressures. Aides to Republican leaders told the Wall Street Journal that there are no plans at this point to bring immigration bills to the floor.

That number is down from 37% in May and June who thought Congress would pass a bill. Sixty-three percent of respondents thought passage of an amnesty was unlikely in 2013.

Unemployed flock to job fairs this summer while lawmakers continue to argue "labor shortage"

Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle frequently tout the “labor shortage” line when pushing for comprehensive immigration reform.  Some of these same lawmakers actually hold job fairs, knowing well that their state or district has unemployment problems.  While others may not hold their own job fairs, they continue to say that “jobs” is their number one priority in Congress.  Why then, are these politicians focused on making the unemployment and wage depression problems even worse in this county by passing amnesty and further increasing the flow of foreign workers into our labor market?

Today marks the 19th day of August Congressional Recess in which the open-borders forces were supposed to have been able to change enough Republican Representatives' minds to get a full-scale amnesty and doubling of legal immigration to the floor of the House.  I'm pleased to say that thus far there has been almost no sign of changed minds thanks in good measure to NumbersUSA activists who have attended more than 200 town hall meetings.  These are constituents seeing their own Congressman and not a case of busing people in from the outside or staging political theatre as the other side has done so often.

New RNC Policy Promotes Amnesty Over Attrition Through Enforcement

At its Summer meeting last week, the Republican National Committee rejected the Attrition Through Enforcement policy established in its 2012 National Platform in favor of amnesty for illegal aliens. Since illegal aliens would be legalized but denied citizenship, the RNC’s spin suggests the new policy would cause no harm. But the work permits offered to illegal aliens cause the greatest damage. And since most voters do not support this shift in policy, the RNC has likely harmed itself.

According to numerous news sources, approximately 400,000 illegal aliens have received deferred action preventing them from deportation proceedings through the Obama Administration DACA program. Sen. Harry Reid: Conference with House would be a 'win' for Schumer-Obama Amnesty Bill

Rep. Harry Reid

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said last week that if the House and Senate went to conference over the Schumer-Obama amnesty bill, S.744, that the bill would ultimately pass. Two House Committee's have already approved several immigration-related pieces of legislation. Should the full House pass any one of the bills, the Senate could take up the bill, substitute it with S.744, and send it back to the House. In lieu of passing the bill, the House could opt to go to conference.
