RSC Budget Proposes to Strengthen Immigration System

The Republican Study Committee's budget proposal for FY2020 suggests reducing low-skilled immigration, requiring all businesses to use E-Verify, and increasing both border and interior enforcement. The budget outline provides a starting point for House GOP lawmakers considering the committee is comprised of 140 Republican House Members, or more than 70% of the caucus.

When news first broke of the arrest of illegal alien Cristhian Rivera, it was reported that his employer, Yarrabee Farms in Brooklyn, Iowa, had used E-Verify to check if he was eligible to work in the United States. The farm's owner has since backtracked and that the company did not run Rivera through E-Verify. But that initial claim called into question the effectiveness of E-Verify and its ability to deter illegal immigration.

Rep. Black Introduces Legislation to Mandate E-Verify & Strengthen Immigration Enforcement

The Securing America's Future Act, H.R. 4760, fell just 20 votes short of passing the House last week, setting a high-water mark for supporting an end to chain migration and mandatory E-Verify. Notably, more than 100 House Republicans voted against the Goodlatte-Ryan-Denham Amnesty, H.R. 6136, and in favor of H.R. 4760 -- a bill that NumbersUSA had supported since its introduction back in January.

DHS released border apprehension numbers for the month of May, and the numbers aren't good. Specifically, the release shows huge spikes in the number of unaccompanied children and family units attempting to cross the border illegally. Pres. Trump's tough talk on enforcement was able to slow the surge over his first year in office, but in year two, word has spread across the globe that his hands are tied when it comes to dealing with illegal border crossers unless Congress makes changes to existing law.

Study: Arizona's E-Verify Law Reduced Illegal Migration, Increased Returns

A study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Colorado-Boulder found that most communities in Mexico send migrants to specific U.S. destinations, and that communities with stronger ties to Arizona saw decreased emigration and increased return migration. Researchers concluded this was the result of the Legal Arizona Workers Act, which requires all Arizona employers to use E-Verify.

Social Security Administration (SSA) Acting Commissioner Nancy Berryhill urged Congress, in a statement today at a House hearing on Social Security fraud, to pass immigration legislation that requires mandatory use of E-Verify for all employers. Earlier this week, USCIS launched a new website -- E-Verify.gov -- containing a wealth of information on the free, online tool that allows employers to check if new hires are authorized to work in the United States. Much of the information could previously be found across the agency's main website, but the new site, dedicated to solely E-Verify, makes the information easier to access and presents it in a more effective way.

ICE Arrests 97 Illegal Workers at Tennessee Meatpacking Plant

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials arrested arrested 97 suspected illegal-alien workers last Thursday, in the largest workplace raid in a decade, at a cattle-slaughter facility in northeast Tennessee just outside Knoxville. The agency worked with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Tennessee Highway Patrol, and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to execute a federal criminal search warrant of the facility.

Industries that have been corrupted by a business model built on illegal hiring have a long way to go to make themselves attractive to a broader swath of the American workforce. E-Verify would make the transition easier by reducing the need for disruptive raids. 95 percent of business support mandatory E-Verify if it includes a safe harbor provision for employers who use the program in good faith. The Goodlatte bill (H.R. 4760) includes such a provision. It currently has 96 cosponsors and the backing of the White House.

Oregon voters to have say on E-Verify Mandate

Oregon voters will soon have the chance to vote on an E-Verify mandate for businesses with 5 or more employees after the state's Supreme Court ruled on the final ballot language last week. Oregonians for Immigration Reform have been working for years to get the initiative, IP 52, on the ballot after successfully passing an initiative to ban driver's licenses to illegal aliens in 2014.
