Activists are still angry that under Rubio's watch as speaker of the Florida House, a string of anti-illegal immigration bills died.

"A lot of our members are very suspicious because of how he acted in the Legislature," said Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, a leading activist group.

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-N.C.) reintroduced his comprehensive immigration enforcement legislation that would mandate E-Verify nationwide, strengthen border security, and improves interior enforcement. The SAVE Act (H.R. 2000) was introduced with 36 original co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle. This is the third consecutive Congress Rep. Shuler has introduced the legislation.

Freshman Rep. Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), who recently created the Freshman Immigration Caucus, took to the House floor this week to question the policies of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Rep. Barletta is the former mayor of Hazleton, Pa. where he passed the first local ordinance to combat illegal immigration. During his floor speech, Rep. Barletta demanded a reason why an illegal alien stopped in his district was not detained by ICE.

Minnesota Senate Passes Secure Communities Bill

The Minnesota State Senate passed a bill earlier today that would require the state to enter into the Department of Homeland Security's Secure Communities program. Under the program, local jails would send fingerprints of all individuals booked into local jails to DHS who would then check to see if the individual is in the country legally.

DHS Requests Extension of National Guard Troops at the Border

Despite Pres. Obama's claim last week that our nation's borders are secure, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has asked Congress for $30 million to keep 1,200 National Guard troops on the border. The troops were first assigned to the border last year at Pres. Obama's direction.

Obama says deportation of criminals up 70 percent under his administration

Roy Beck, executive director of NumbersUSA, a group that favors reducing immigration into the United States, said it's true that the deportation rate, particularly deportation of convicted criminals, has been higher under Obama.

"My sense is that Obama deserves credit, for all the complaints about him, that he has done maybe a little better than Bush on deportations," Beck said. "I think the main context, though, is that the amount of deportations under Bush was rather small."

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed Georgia's immigration enforcement bill earlier today that requires businesses in the state with more than 10 employees to use E-Verify. The bill also cracks down on individuals that transport or harbor illegal aliens and allows police to check the immigration status of certain suspects and arrest them if they are found to be in the country illegally.

Democrats in the House and Senate have re-introduced the DREAM Act, which would give a path to citizenship to children who were brought into the United States illegally, if they go to college or serve in the military. The act failed last year, but Roy Beck, president of NumbersUSA, an organization that advocates reducing the number of immigrants in the country, suggests the DREAM Act could be a valuable bargaining chip if paired with a law mandating E-Verify, a system that allows employers to determine employees' eligibility to work in the United States.

59% of Americans Favor Cutting off Federal Funding to Sanctuary Cities

A new poll conducted by Rasmussen finds that 59% of Americans want to cut federal funding to sanctuary cities. The poll of likely voters also found that 58% of Americans think the Justice Department should take action against sanctuary cities, and 65% oppose the creation of sanctuary cities in the first place.

AZ Petitions Supreme Court to Lift Injunction on SB1070

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer announced on Monday that she is petitioning the Supreme Court to lift the injunction against some of the enforcement provisions of SB1070 that were put into place by a federal district judge and upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. Both courts ruled that four provisions, including one that allows police officers to check the immigration status of individuals they stop, detain, or arrest, usurps federal authority of immigration enforcement.

Congress may be in recess, but state legislators are busy at work crafting legislation aimed at reducing magnets for illegal immigration and helping unemployed Americans in their state get back to work. Legislation was finalized in Montana, while legislation in Alabama, Florida, and Indiana took steps closer to final passage. And in Colorado, a proposal to reward illegal immigration was defeated.

The immigration-reduction group NumbersUSA, which waged war on John McCain in 2008, has already set its sights on Gingrich. The group, which advocates stricter controls on both legal and illegal immigration, has given his immigration agenda a D- grade — the worst of its ranking of the GOP presidential contenders.

“In last several months, he’s kind of gone back to being bad — as bad as he was when he was in Congress,” said the group’s executive director Roy Beck.

First Audited, Now Investigated: Chipotle Faces Criminal Investigation over Illegal Hiring Practices

The House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement hosted a hearing Wednesday morning titled “The H-2A Visa Program: Meeting the Growing Needs of American Agriculture?” While it is very clear that the H-2A program needs to be reformed and made more user friendly, it's apparent that some Members of Congress are eager to jump on the AgJOBS Amnesty bandwagon to “legalize” the “undocumented” workers and expect them to stay in agriculture instead of migrating over to other industries like construction.

Last week marked the end of the first quarter of the 112th Congress. With more than 100 new Members of the House and Senate, the 112th Congress opened for business with the largest Freshman class in 60 years. While this Congress was destined for some tough fights considering a sizable Republican majority in the House, a Democrat-controlled Senate, and a President not prone to compromise, the best word to describe the first quarter of this Congress is: slow.
