Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) has introduced legislation in the Senate that would amend federal law to require at least one parent of all children born in the United States be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. The Birthright Citizenship Act of 2011 (S.723) amends section 301 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and is similar to legislation offered by Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) in the House.

Alabama House Passes E-Verify Bill

The Alabama House overwhelmingly passed, 73-to-28, an E-Verify measure on Tuesday that requires all businesses to check new hires through the system. The bill also allows police officers to check the immigration status of individuals detained or arrested and requires verification of citizenship before receiving public services.

New Study Finds 57% of Immigrant Households with Children Use Welfare

A new study from the Center of Immigration Studies shows that 57% of households headed by an immigrant with children under the age of 18 receive some form of welfare. Only 39% of native born households with children receive welfare services. The study included households headed by both illegal and legal immigrants

Republicans ask for troops to remain at border

Stepping up the immigration enforcement bidding war, House Republicans last week asked President Obama to extend the deployment of 1,200 National Guard troops on the U.S.-Mexico border past June 30, when their mission is slated to end.

Last year Congress passed a bill boosting the number of U.S. Border Patrol agents, but the 10 Republicans, all members of the Homeland Security Committee, said the new agents have not been fully hired and trained yet, so the National Guard troops should remain.

The 2010 census found 43.2 percent of Arizonans under 18 were Hispanic and that whites were for the first time in a minority in that age group, at 41.6 percent. States were supposed to be REAL ID compliant by May of this year, but the deadline has been extended to January 15, 2013.

As for immigration, Obama told attendees at the event sponsored by the Univision television network that it is not appropriate to grant "temporary protected status" to undocumented workers. Obama said he cannot suspend deportations by executive order.

The president said deportation of criminals is up 70%, while deportation of non-criminals is down.

Virginia Gov. McDonnell Accelerates E-Verify Law Through Executive Order

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell ordered that all executive branch state agencies must use E-Verify to check all new hires beginning June 1, 2011. The state legislature had passed a bill last year that requires state agencies to begin using E-Verify by the end of 2012, but Gov. McDonnell's executive order implements the law 18 months sooner.

240 Suspected Illegal Aliens Fired in Minnesota for Not Providing Valid Work Papers

A janitorial firm in Minnesota is firing more than half of its workforce after workers were unable to provide valid paperwork proving that they are authorized to work in the United States. According to a spokesman for the SEIU, the employees at Harvard Maintenance will be let go by the end of the month.

NM secretary of state reviews voter rolls, list of foreign nationals with driver’s licenses

New Mexico’s top elections official told lawmakers Tuesday she is concerned that a review of the state’s voter registration rolls and a list of the thousands of foreign nationals who have been issued driver’s licenses under a much debated state law has turned up evidence of fraud.

Secretary of State Dianna Duran issued a statement Tuesday evening that provided details of her office’s findings after two days of cross checking the databases.

After facing a more hostile House Committee last week, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano testified before the more friendly confines of the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday. Even though the Democratic-controlled Committee allowed Napolitano to be less defensive, she still faced tough questions about border security and the amnesty memos that circulated last summer.

Business Owner to Serve 10 Months in Prison After Hiring Illegal Aliens

The president of a Southern California furniture manufacturer has been sentenced to 10 months in prison and fines totaling $15,000 for hiring illegal aliens and then obstructing police during the investigation. Rick Vartanian, president of Brownwood Furniture, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Utah immigration plan could stir legal storm

Poll results can vary widely, depending on how the questions are worded. Nowhere is this truer than when the subject is immigration. A recent poll conducted by the University of Texas and Texas Tribune is no different. Not only did a question regarding Birthright Citizenship mislead those being asked, but it also misrepresented the 14th Amendment.

Last month, the Government Accountability Office issued a report saying that the Department of Homeland Security had less than 50 percent 'operational control' of the Southwest Border. The House Homeland Security Committee brought in DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to discuss the findings of the report, but instead, the Members and Napolitano quibbled over the definition of 'operational control'.

VICTORY IN GEORGIA: State House Passes E-Verify Bill by 2-to-1 Margin

The Georgia House approved legislation today that will require the mandatory use of E-Verify by a 113-to-56 margin. In addition to mandating E-Verify, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011 (HB 87) would also allow local law enforcement officers to run immigration status checks under certain circumstances and establish penalties for knowingly harboring or transporting illegal aliens.

Together, they make up nearly half of the agricultural workers that provide the nation's food supply. Yet the media is conspicuously silent on these legal farm workers, while devoting copious copy to the interests of their illegal competitors and their employers.

Virginia Legislature Approves Tougher E-Verify Law

Before wrapping up its 2011 legislative session, the Virginia Legislature approved several immigration-enforcement measures, including an expansion of the state's current E-Verify law and a bill that would require the Department of Motor Vehicles to cancel a state ID or driver's license for known illegal aliens. The bills are expected to be signed into law by Governor Bob McDonnell.
