Missouri House endorses bill blocking Real ID

The Missouri House is objecting to federal rules for issuing driver's licenses, but the result could mean Missourians will need passports to board planes.

A House bill would bar Missouri officials from complying with the driver's license portion of the federal Real ID Act.

The 2005 law requires states to verify any proof-of-citizenship documents presented by U.S. citizens applying for driver's licenses. It also sets standards for official ID cards issued by states.

Maryland Passes Legislation to Require Proof of Citizenship for Driver's Licenses

In a last minute vote before the Maryland General Assembly session wrapped up, lawmakers passed a bill Monday night that attempts to bring the state into compliance with the Federal REAL ID Act with respect to state-issued driver's licenses. The state was one of four in the country that allowed illegal aliens to obtain a driver's license, but that will end on June 1.

Utahns favor immigration bill by wide margin

Rep. Stephen Clark, R-Provo, has proposed a bill that will fund a $150,000 study assessing the fiscal impacts of undocumented workers on the state in five, 10 and 25 years. The bill also would delay the implementation of immigration bill SB81.

"We're putting a big burden on the state in implementing this, and on employers," Clark said. "We should know every piece of data that is out there. There is no appetite to rush this."

Indiana State Senator Proposes Tougher Immigration Bill

Fraudulent Arizona Prop. 202 Would Enable, Not Stop, Illegal Hiring

Billboards Highlight Consequences of Illegal-Alien Smuggling

The Border Patrol has begun erecting billboards in Texas to remind commercial truckers that they are gambling with their livelihoods when they haul illegal aliens or drugs. The billboards, which are part of the Texas Hold ‘Em initiative, carry the blunt message: “Smuggle Aliens… Smuggle Drugs… Lose Your Commercial Driver’s License in Texas.” The federal-state initiative, which was first announced in June, uses existing state laws to revoke the commercial driver’s licenses of truck drivers who are convicted of federal charges for smuggling illegal aliens or drugs.

Need for Valid SSN Reduces Number of Oregon Driver’s License Applicants

In February, after Oregon Gov. Ted Kulongoski’s (D) executive order took effect requiring driver’s license applicants to provide valid Social Security numbers, the number of people taking the test in Spanish fell by more than 80 percent. The executive order was designed to prevent illegal aliens from obtaining driver’s licenses. Oregon previously was a magnet for illegal aliens seeking photo IDs.

Pressure Forces Ga. County To Comply With Law, Check Eligibility for Public Benefits

King and NumbersUSA members, Cobb County, Georgia will begin checking the immigration status of every applicant for a business license. As of July 1, 2007, Georgia law required all local governments to use certain federal tools to determine the eligibility of applicants for "public benefits" such as business licenses. However, Cobb County is the first local government in the state to commit to do so, the Marietta Daily Journal reports
