Immigrant Vetting is "as American as Apple Pie"

In a speech Monday Donald Trump outlined his proposal for increasing immigrant vetting, which the mainstream media immediately slammed as being “un-American” and “crazy.” But as several notable scholars point out, history and the law are on Mr. Trump’s side, not theirs. For example, as Professor George Borjas of Harvard’s Kennedy School recently quipped “If [they] just do a couple of minutes of googling before reacting, it would become very apparent very quickly that immigrant vetting has a very long tradition in American history.”

According to Border Patrol statistics, released last week, the number of illegal aliens caught at the southern border has already exceeded the number caught in FY15, with two months left in the fiscal year. 332,465 illegal aliens have been apprehended at the southern border so far this year compared to the 331,333 apprehended last year.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Rep. Bob Dold (R-Ill.) made the push for amnesty for the approximately 11 million illegal aliens currently in the U.S on Wednesday during a business immigration policy roundtable. The roundtable was hosted by the the groups Illinois Business Immigration Coalition (IBIC) and the tech immigration advocacy group FWD.us, which was created by Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and fights for increasing immigration, specifically increasing H-1B visa caps.

Having just returned from a week-long vacation in The Bahamas with my family, I’d like to report back on some unexpected immigration-related findings. It seems that The Bahamas – a true paradise filled with gorgeous vistas and wonderful people – is subject to the same kind of illegal and legal immigration problems that plague the United States. We spoke to many native Bahamians and, when the conversation turned to employment, virtually all complained about foreign nationals, especially guest workers, taking jobs.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., said the Obama Administration is exposing the nation to danger by maximizing the intake of refugees from terrorist-producing countries. As evidence, Sen. Sessions cited examples of 20 refugees who were implicated in, or convicted for, terrorism or terrorism-related offenses in recent years. He said refugees should be supported in or close to their countries rather than resettled in the U.S.

However, evidence shows that the hundred of thousands of H-1B professionals that come to the U.S. every year are less educated than American workers.
