One of the most oft-repeated phrases one hears in the current discussion over U.S. immigration policy is that “America is a nation of immigrants.” This is merely a tautological statement that is true of any nation. Immigration to American has been more recent than to most other countries, and did radically alter its demographic make-up in a short period of time during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries.
When Baltimore, Maryland and Ferguson, Missouri exploded in civil unrest the last two years, police incidents were the catalysts. But many commentators, including Pres. Obama, suggested that joblessness and economic hopelessness – especially among the young – were the fuel that sustained the street rage.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., announced a House Republican national security strategy that highlights border security, overhauling the nation’s immigration system, interior immigration enforcement, and improved screening of admissions. Among other things the plan calls for developing the means to track illegal aliens within the U.S., detaining and removing criminal aliens and restoring overall immigration enforcement. The plan also slams President Obama for “utterly false claims that security is improving.”
Expert witnesses told a Senate panel on Wednesday that there is no evidence to support the idea that H-2B visa workers fill in labor shortages for jobs that employers claim "Americans will not do". The Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and the National Interest held the hearing to discuss how the H-2B visa impacts American job opportunities and wages before a likely debate over the issue in Congress this summer.
Primary challengers were lining up against North Carolina incumbent Renee Ellmers and her history of supporting amnesties and increases in foreign workers. But after a federal court ordered the last minute redrawing of the Congressional district boundaries, Ellmers was pitted against Congressman George Holding. Still, it wasn't enough to save her seat after a 4-year history of voting against her constituents' wishes on immigration.
H.R. 5398, the Immigration for a Competitive America Act, would move some family-based green card categories to employment-based categories and lead to the quadrupling of H-1B guest-worker visas. The legislation would also mandate E-Verify and strengthen criminal penalties for employers, but would allow foreign workers to claim tax credits for their children.
