Nine House Members, headed by Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.), sent a letter to the Appropriations Subcommittee for Homeland Security asking them to continue the increase of H-2B visas that was approved in the omnibus spending bill last year.
The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld an Arizona law that made it a crime to steal someone’s identity for the purpose of obtaining a job. The law had targeted illegal aliens committing identity theft but the court said it did not violate the Constitution because it applied to others as well.
A new chart released by the Senate Subcommittee Immigration and the National Interest, headed by Chairman Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), shows that deportations have declined by 43% in the last three years while the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) budget for the detention and removal of aliens has grown by 25%.
Sen. Sessions (R-Ala.) released a statement opposing the criminal justice reform bill that would release many criminal illegal aliens onto the streets. Sen. Sessions explained that the bill would shorten mandatory minimums for repeat drug traffickers that are being held in federal prison.
H.R. 5141, the Central American Amnesty Termination Act, would defund the Central American Minors program that helps identify refugee candidates in Central American and relocates them to the United States.
At a hearing today, House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, said “In a three-year period, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has released more than 86,000 criminal aliens into the American public…These are people that were here illegally, got caught committing a crime, were convicted of that crime and instead of deporting them, they were just released back out in the United States of America.” Chairman Chaffetz said the released aliens had been convicted of over 231,000 crimes.
H.R. 5102, the Interior Immigration Enforcement Act, would criminalize foreign nationals who overstay their visas.
H.R. 5103, the Criminal Alien Detention and Removal Act, would require mandatory supervised release for criminal aliens.
Intel announced that it will layoff 12,000 American workers after requesting 14,523 H-1B visas and green cards to import foreign workers. The company said the layoffs are part of a "restructuring" plan to move the company's focus to mobile devices, yet only American workers will be affected.
