Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, urged Congress to block Pres. Obama’s new proposed rule, published on New Year’s Eve, that would bypass the per-country limits on foreign workers set by Congress.
Swedish politicians and officials, of all people, are raising a revolutionary idea on refugees that I've been contemplating for several months. They are questioning the justification for providing permanent residence and eventual citizenship for refugees and migrants who claim to be refugees. Instead, refuge may be for only one-to-three years.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) has endorsed presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) and will be joining him on the campaign trail. His support for one of the Gang of Eight bill members puts a spotlight on his own radical immigration statements.
Officials from Central American countries met in Guatemala City this week to create a plan to help around 8,000 Cubans who are stalled in Costa Rica reach the U.S. The countries have decided to provide flights for the Cuban migrants from Costa Rica to El Salvador then bus them to Mexico where they can cross the U.S. border.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is planning a nationwide campaign to locate and deport illegal aliens who have illegally crossed the border since last year. This move comes after a recent DHS report shows that deportations have declined by 25% since 2014.
Today the Texas Attorney General’s Office, on behalf of a 26-state coalition, filed a brief asking the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold a 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling blocking President Obama’s unconstitutional executive amnesty. The brief, which opposes the Administration’s motion for certiorari (i.e., a hearing on the case), argues the president exceeded his authority in attempting to unilaterally grant lawful presence and work permits to millions of illegal aliens.
The Department of Homeland Security has asked the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to extend the termination of the current STEM OPT program from February 12, 2016 to May 10, 2016 in an effort to review the 50,500 comments it received on the replacement regulation. DHS estimates that over 85 percent of the comments are unique and must receive responses before a final rule can be published.
Immigration does “grow the economy” and highly-skilled immigrants do contribute more in taxes than they receive in direct government services (education, healthcare, entitlements, etc.). It would be very difficult to find an economist who disagreed with the above statement.
