Reps. Blackburn, Smith, Barletta, and DesJarlais introduce legislation to Halt Refugee Resettlement Program

Reps. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Lamar Smith (R-Texas), Lou Barletta (R-Pa.), and Scott DesJarlais (R-Tenn.) have introduced legislation that would halt the refugee resettlement program until its impacts on the country can be further examined. H.R.4218 would not only examine the budgetary impacts of refugee resettlement, but also require the Department of Homeland Security to produce a report identifying past refugees who have committed criminal acts in the United States.

Sens. Cruz and Sessions introduce strong H-1B reform bill

Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) have introduced the American Jobs First Act, S.2394, that would make dramatic improvements to the H-1B visa program, including the establishment of a minimum salary and the creation of a cooling off period that would prevent employers from using the program within two years of employee strikes, lay-offs, furloughs, or other types of non-voluntary, not-for-cause dismissals. The legislation would also end the visa lottery.

American Jobs First Act of 2015

S. 2394, the American Jobs First Act of 2015, would implement major reforms of the H-1B program including adding a minimum wage provision ($110,000), and increasing the fee for employers to $10,000. More than 90% of H-1Bs issued in 2013 were for positions that paid less than $110,000 per year. The bill would also end the Visa Lottery.

S. 2395 would open state assistance for incarcerating aliens charged with certain crimes (no longer just conviction) as well as aliens for whom immigration status is unable to be verified. The House companion bill is H.R. 5035.

H.R. 4218 would halt all refugee resettlement until both the President and the Department of Homeland Security provides reports to Congress detailing the program's costs and procedures and a joint resolution is passed through Congress.

Ross Mirkarimi) to end the sanctuary ordinance that prohibits the Sheriff’s Department in San Francisco County from notifying the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) of the immigration status of any inmate in the Sheriff Department’s custody.
