E-Verify Bill Passes N.C. State Committee

A bill to extend mandatory E-Verify usage in North Carolina passed a state Senate committee on July 7. SB 32, which is sponsored by Sen. John Snow, a Democrat, would require city and county governments, and certain state and local government contractors, to use the federal E-Verify system to check the workplace eligibility of new hires. State agencies were required to use E-Verify beginning in 2007, so this bill is seen as the next step in an effort to extend E-Verify usage and, thereby, free up jobs for unemployed citizens and legal residents.

On the Amendment S.Amdt. 1399 to S.Amdt. 1373 to H.R. 2892 (Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act, 2010)

Supported an amendment to complete 700 miles of border fencing in 2009
Sen. ZZlastnameZZ supported the DeMint amendment to H.R. 2892, the DHS Appropriations bill. The DeMint amendment mandates that the 700 miles of border fencing (which was previously approved and appropriated for) be completed. The DeMint amendment passed 54-44.

Columnist Disconnects Statue of Liberty and Immigration

Former Washington Post reporter and former Director for the Pew Hispanic Center Roberto Suro wrote a column for his old paper this weekend that challenges the notion that the Statue of Liberty is a symbol for immigration. For years, the Statue has been associated with nearby Ellis Island, which is known for its role of processing immigrants, and year-after-year, the Statue hosts citizenship ceremonies. But Suro writes the Statue's meaning has gotten "muddled over the years."

Structure of Independence as Important as the Declaration -- Thanks, James Madison

A few more thoughts at the end of a weekend of our national birthday celebration . . . On July 4, 1788, James Madison arrived on the doorsteps of Mount Vernon, having ridden directly from Richmond after the Virginia convention ratified the U.S. Constitution. That afternoon, the young Madison and the august George Washington began a long and intense collaboration on how the high ideals of the Declaration of Independence adopted 12 years earlier could be sustained. Without a Structure of Independence and faithful guardians working within that structure through the ages, they knew, the ideals would be sabotaged or would wither.

4th of July -- A Celebration of a National Community That Chooses Its Own Quality of Life

Would the signers of the Declaration of Independence have thought it principled for the majority of U.S. politicians today to refuse to give even returning U.S. military veterans preference over illegal aliens for jobs? The 4th of July is OUR time -- to remember the document that declared a new national community and insisted that the government exists primarily to protect and provide for the quality of life of the MEMBERS of that community.

Sounds like a job a 67 year-old American WILL do!

One small favor from this disastrous recession: slightly fewer reporters are mindlessly scribbling down the phrase, "jobs Americans won't do." Over four hundred NumbersUSA members wrote to me personally after my latest fundraising email. About 275 of them are unemployed. You wouldn't believe all the jobs that they used to do and would very much like to do again.

More than 650 Employers Notified of an Immigration Audit for Possibly Hiring Illegal Aliens

The Obama Administration has notified more than 650 employers across the nation that Immigration and Customs Enforcement will begin auditing employee files in an effort to find businesses employing illegal aliens. The move is part of the administration's immigration strategy to focus the attention of enforcement on employers who hire illegal aliens rather than the illegal aliens themselves.
