In a letter last week addressed to a top federal immigration official, Nelson praised Walter Lara, a 23-year-old who is to be deported July 6. He called him ''exactly the type of person'' a new immigration bill is ''trying to help.'' Lara's story ''vividly illustrates'' the need for Congress to pass the DREAM Act, Nelson, a Democrat, said.
Rep. Lamar Smith Makes the Case for Unemployed Americans in Nation's Largest Paper
Representative Lamar Smith (R-Texas) had an op-ed published in Monday's edition of USA Today speaking up for the more than 14 million unemployed United States citizens. The letter was published in response to the USA Today editorial "Recession freezes immigration debate but points to answers" also published in Monday's paper.

Wisconsin Denies Driver's Licenses to Illegal Aliens
The Wisconsin legislature approved a new budget and it forbids illegal aliens from obtaining driver's licenses. The budget does, however, allow children of illegal aliens who attend Wisconsin high schools to qualify for in-state tuition.
Rep. Todd Tiahrt Cosponsors Three Immigration-Reduction Bills
Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-Kan.) added his name to the list of cosponsors to three of the "5 Great Immigration-Reduction Bills" supported by NumbersUSA. On Thursday, Rep. Tiahrt cosponsored Rep. Phil Gingrey's Chain Migration Bill, Rep. Nathan Deal's Birthright Citizenship Act, and Rep. Marsha Blackburn's CLEAR Act.
Obama Says There's No Consensus on Immigration Reform
Pres. Barack Obama took the first step on Thursday towards immigration reform and an amnesty for more than 11 million illegal aliens. Members of the Administration met with 30 Members of Congress from both sides of the issue and both sides of the aisle to get the debate rolling, but Pres. Obama said after the meeting that there was "not by any means consensus across the table."
