Congressional Conferees to Decide Fate of E-Verify Amendments on Stimulus Package

Leaders from both the House and Senate began meeting on Tuesday night and will continue to meet on Wednesday to try and reach a compromise between the two different versions of the economic stimulus package. The House version contains two E-Verify amendments, which would extend the worker verification tool for another five years and require all businesses using stimulus money to use it. The Senate version does not contain the amendments.

Senate Stimulus Passes and Allows for the Hiring of Illegal Aliens

The Senate has passed an $838 billion economic stimulus package with a vote of 61-37. The Senate bill as it stands allows for the hiring of illegal aliens. The House and Senate will now confer to come up with a unified proposal that will then need approval from both the House and Senate before being sent to the President.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce's reaction to a limited set of stricter rules for banks hiring foreign workers answers a bar debate that long has raged. The question has always been whether if we had another Great Depression would the Chamber still continue to lobby for more foreign workers on the basis of worker shortages. This week, the debate is settled. YES, THEY WOULD!

SMITH: Keep E-Verify system

The need to protect jobs for Americans is clear. Pushing for passage of the stimulus package, President Obama said, "The workers who are returning home to tell their husbands and wives and children that they no longer have a job... they need help now."

Ironically, the same day, news outlets reported that the Obama administration quietly delayed implementation of a rule designed precisely for that purpose: the requirement that federal contractors use E-Verify.

5 North Carolina counties push jail deportations

Now, Orange, Harnett, Duplin, New Hanover and Buncombe counties are jumping in, testing a new program that will eventually be nationwide. The program, called Secure Communities, provides jails with equipment that uses inmates' fingerprints to check immigration status and criminal records, then automatically alerts immigration officials to inmates who are in the country illegally.
