Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) has introduced the Employee Verification Act (H.R. 2679) which would extend E-Verify for five years. The program is currently set to expire in September after attempts for a longer extension failed during the spring's debates over the economic stimulus bill and omnibus spending bills.
There were 26 original cosponsors when Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) introduced the SAFE of 2009 (H.R.2305). The bill would put an end to the Visa Lottery, which awards 50,000 green cards per year without regard to merit. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has been pretty vocal since last fall's election about his desire to pass an amnesty, but over the last couple of days, he's turned up the rhetoric. Reid said late last week that immigration reform will happen during this Congress and preferably before the end of this year.

Jobless numbers increased again in May, reaching a 26-year high of 9.4%. The job market cut another 345,000 jobs last month, bringing the total of jobless Americans to 14.5 million. Since December 2007, more than 6 million Americans have lost their job, while the federal government has imported more than 2.5 million foreign workers.
I did some surfing of the internet and thus far have found that 95% of the blogs and comments (outside of our own website) about my Senate testimony Wednesday suggest I was a little crazy to say that immigration-driven U.S. population growth is an environmental threat. Granted, there really wasn't a lot of attention to the hearing on S. 424, but . . . .
On Wednesday, Maine's Democratic Governor John Baldacci vetoed a bill that would have allowed illegal aliens to get driver's licenses. NumbersUSA members flooded the Governor's office and Senate offices with phone calls just after Senators passed the bill in an effort to promote a veto and successful override.
