Senator Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) will begin the debate on immigration reform when the new chair of the immigration senate subcommittee holds a hearing on Thursday. Schumer played a key role in the 1986 amnesty, brokering a compromise on agricultural workers that helped the bill pass.
The conceptual framework used by environmentalists such as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. when they fight against pollution applies precisely to illegal immigration. They refuse to embrace the logical conclusion of their ideas because it is not politically correct.
Senator Chuck Grassley, along with Sen. Dick Durbin, introduced legislation to reform the H-1B and L Visa programs. The U.S. issues 65,000 H-1B Visas annually to high-skilled foreign workers in fields where there is a worker shortage. L-1 Visas are issued to employees of foreign companies and allows them to work in the United States for three years.
If the government were really honest about paying for amnesty, they would do something like they did with the $700 billion bank bailout last October, (the TARP). The leaders of the government would come before the American voters and say, “We need $999 billion to pay for amnesty for people who entered the country illegally.”
