Report: ICE Targeting Fraudulent Asylees for Deportation

National Public Radio reports the Trump Administration is considering stripping asylum status from those who won it fraudulently. During a 2012 investigation into New York asylum mills, federal prosecutors arrested 30 immigration lawyers, paralegals and interpreters who had enabled asylum-seekers to acquire benefits fraudulently. The 3,500 asylees they helped, and possibly more than 10,000 family members who obtained “derivative asylum status,” could be deported if officials find fraud occurred.

California Judge Rules State Sanctuary Law Unconstitutional

Orange County Superior Court Judge James Crandell ruled that California’s law limiting police cooperation with ICE violates Huntington Beach’s status as a charter city under the state constitution. The ruling makes Huntington Beach and California’s other 120 charter cities exempt from complying with the state sanctuary law.

ICE Conducts Enforcement Actions in Los Angeles, North Texas, Oklahoma and Wisconsin

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement bureau announced the arrest of criminal aliens and immigration violators in North Texas and Oklahoma (98), Wisconsin (83), and the Los Angeles area (150). Commenting on the arrests by the Chicago Enforcement and Removal office, Director Ricardo Wong said, “This operation targeted criminal aliens, public safety threats, and individuals who have violated our nation’s immigration laws. Operations like this reflect the vital work our ERO officers do every day to protect our communities, uphold public safety and protect the integrity of our immigration laws.”



President to U.N.: Unaccountable International Organizations Should Not Control Migration

Speaking before the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, President Donald Trump touted the “right of every nation… to set its own immigration policy in accordance with its national interests.” He addressed instances of “uncontrolled migration” and confirmed the United States will not participate in the new Global Compact on Migration, saying “Migration should not be governed by an international body unaccountable to our own citizens.”

Florida Commission Approves E-Verify Mandate for County Contracts

Brevard County commissioners voted 4-0 to approve a resolution requiring county contractors to use E-Verify as a condition of doing business. The county already requires E-Verify use on contracts involving state or federal dollars, and will soon consider a mandate for all employers that have county business tax receipts.

Trump Administration Plans to Enforce Public Charge Law

The Trump Administration will soon propose a federal rule to help ensure that immigrants and non-immigrants seeking entry to the United States rely on the resources of their sponsors and family members rather than public benefits. It would define the term “public charge” in regulation and to identify the types, amount, and duration of receipt of public benefits that would be considered in determining whether someone is inadmissible. Once published, the public will have 60 days to comment before the rule is finalized.

No person in the Administration has done more to advance Pres. Trump's immigration agenda than Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Attorney General Restricts Judges' Discretion to Terminate Deportation Cases

Ruling in two cases before him, Attorney General Jeff Sessions determined that immigration court judges may not end removal proceedings unless DHS has failed to prove its case for deportation or regulations expressly authorize it. His ruling notes that “immigration judges have no inherent authority to terminate or dismiss removal proceedings,” and that “authority to dismiss or terminate proceedings is not a free-floating power an immigration judge may invoke whenever he or she believes that a case no longer merits space on the docket.”

The assumption that immigration policy must be either a threat to American workers or "a net positive to the country" is as false as it is ubiquitous. Not only can immigration generate a net economic surplus and leave workers worse off at the same time, but that's exactly what's happening under our current system.
