Brevard County, Florida Adopts Anti-Sanctuary Policy

Brevard County commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution that prevents the county from developing, endorsing or enforcing “policies which knowingly prohibit or impede communication or cooperation with a federal immigration agency with respect to federal immigration enforcement." Commissioner John Tobia, the resolution’s sponsor, said it was important to declare Brevard a 'non-sanctuary county' following the City of Orlando's decision to prohibit officers from asking people about their immigration status. 

DACA Restart Expected to Cause Surge, Delay Legal-Immigrant Benefits

The Justice Department requested a stay of D.C. Circuit Judge John Bates’ order requiring USCIS to restart DACA by August 23. Accompanying the request was a declaration by Acting USCIS Deputy Director Tracy Renaud stating the agency expects a surge of almost 50,000 applicants if DACA is restarted now. That will force USCIS to give those applications precedence over the handling immigrant and non-immigrant benefit applications.

Report: Rising Number of Indian Nationals Crossing SW Border Illegally

FOX News reports that one of the fastest-growing groups of aliens crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally are from India. In the El Centro border sector, just west of the Arizona-California border, Border Patrol Agents caught six aliens from India crossing in fiscal year 2015. More than 3,400 were arrested so far this fiscal year.

Business Owners Targeted in Nebraska, Minnesota Enforcement Actions

ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) division arrested 14 business owners and managers in Nebraska and Minnesota for colluding to create an illegal alien workforce and defrauding the government. Also arrested were 133 illegal aliens who were working unlawfully at the businesses. Officials are still looking to take three owners or managers into custody as part of the operation.

"Vox explains the news." Or so they say. Last week a Vox writer tried to explain how Baby Boomers are dependent upon immigrants to fund their Social Security. This is untrue. The Social Security system is in dire straits, but immigration is not going to save it. In fact, our current immigration system is putting strains on the system, and more immigration would only make matters worse.

Judge Hears Testimony in Texas-Led DACA Case

Texas District Judge Andrew Hanen heard arguments in a case brought by 7 states seeking to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The plaintiff states largely relied on arguments that persuaded Hanen to block implementation of the Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents (DAPA) program and extended DACA program in 2015. The states asked Hanen for a nationwide injunction but he did not issue a ruling yesterday.

Border Apprehensions Drop in July

Border apprehensions along the Southwest border dropped for a second straight month, according to new statistics released by the Department of Homeland Security. According to the report, 31,303 illegal border crossers were apprehended last month compared to 34,095 in June. Apprehensions are down more than 22% from this year's high of 40,333 in May.

DHS Report: Almost 702,000 Visa Overstays in FY 2017

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released its FY 2017 Entry/Exit Overstay Report, which says that 701,900 foreign nationals overstayed their visa. The Washington Examiner notes the amount is greater than the number (526,901) who crossed the southwest border illegally that year. The federal government has not implemented an automated biometric data system to track whether foreign nationals leave the country despite a mandate dating back to 1996.

AG Sessions Criticizes Federal Judge for Ordering DACA Restart

AG Sessions criticized Federal Judge John Bates of the D.C. Circuit Court on Monday for ordering the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to start accepting new applications for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The judge delayed the effective date of the decision to August 23rd in order to give the Administration time to appeal his ruling.
