A study by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Colorado-Boulder found that most communities in Mexico send migrants to specific U.S. destinations, and that communities with stronger ties to Arizona saw decreased emigration and increased return migration. Researchers concluded this was the result of the Legal Arizona Workers Act, which requires all Arizona employers to use E-Verify.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 114 illegal aliens during raids today at Corso's Flower & Garden Center, an Ohio-based landscaping company. ICE agents raided two of the landscaping business' locations -- one in the city of Sandusky and the other in the city of Castilia -- where ICE Spokesperson Khaalid Walls said that agents seized "a large volume of business documents" as part of the investigation.
A recent 2018 jobs report, released by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), shows that employment for all foreign workers in the U.S. increased by 3%, while employment for all American workers increased a little less than 1.5%. The data also shows a much higher growth rate of employment for foreign national men -- an increase of 2.7% -- compared to employment for American-born men -- a 1.7% increase.
Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.) filed a Discharge Petition on May 9 for Rep. Jeff Denham's (R-Calif.) resolution (H.Res. 774) that will force a series of votes in the House on several DACA amnesty proposals. Twenty-three other House Republicans have signed the Petition in addition to Rep. Curbelo. So far, 193 Democrats have signed the petition bringing the total number of signers to 216 out of the 218 needed for the Petition to succeed.
According to Newsweek, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reported that the agency's helpline, set up by the Trump Administration, received more than 5,000 tips, reporting H-1B visa fraud and abuse, between April 3, 2017 and May 21, 2018.
The Washington Times reports the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) paid over $1.4 billion last year to care for nearly 41,000 Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs) in its facilities. UACs stayed 41 days on average, so the care cost taxpayers about $670 per day for each child. HHS Deputy Secretary Eric Hargan said until Congress fixes the laws inducing UACs to seek asylum, “the American taxpayer is paying the bill for costly programs that aggravate the problem and put children in dangerous situations.”
U.S. District Judge Andrew S. Hanen rejected a motion to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Texas and six other states that challenges the legality of the DACA amnesty program. The one-sentence order rejected the motion to dismiss, which was filed Tuesday by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), under the assertion that the court should either throw out the lawsuit case, put it on hold or transfer it to California.
During a conference call for the press this week, the White House called for a bipartisan congressional effort to close loopholes driving a new border crisis. Assistant DHS Secretary Jonathan Hoffman said “our immigration system is clearly being gamed by those who are aware of the loopholes and shortcomings of our system … DHS is unable to address these loopholes because of a failure by Congress to act.”
Loopholes in the current immigration system enabled U.S. employers to hire 403,000 foreign nationals with pending asylum claims in FY2017. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) granted these asylum-seekers Employment Authorization Documents (EAD), which authorized them to work in the United States. Most of these individuals would likely have sought work in lower-skilled occupations, competing with American workers and putting downward pressure on wages.
