The Department of Homeland Security has temporarily delayed a requirement for federal contractors to use E-Verify to check the immigration status of their employees while a related lawsuit is resolved. The rule was supposed to take effect Jan. 15 but will now be implemented on Feb. 20.
America's service industry lost another 273,000 jobs in December, but a major union leader in the industry renewed his call for permanently tying up 7 million jobs (largely service jobs) with the illegal aliens who now hold them. At the same time, other national amnesty leaders yesterday accused NumbersUSA of ugly, divisive politics for our call to suspend most foreign-labor importation while 10 million unemployed Americans look for jobs.
United States Citizen and Immigration Services announced on Wednesday that more than 100,000 employers have signed up to use E-Verify. The system is a free, internet-based application that allows employers to verify the eligibility of new employees.
The South Carolina Illegal Immigration and Reform Act went into effect on January 1, and the state has provided training sessions to employers who will be impacted by the new laws. A new Associate Press report says that employers say the new mandates will be painless.
A national crisis requires bold action. NumbersUSA today urged President-Elect Obama to immediately suspend most importation of foreign workers to give relief to the American workers who will be left without a job if the importation continues. Unlike all other emergency recommendations, our call to action would not cost hundreds of billions of dollars. In fact, it would cost almost nothing.
On the first day of Congress, Senate Majority Leader Reid introduced the "Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act" (S. 9), suggesting his intention in the first months of the new Congress to push through some version of amnesty and immigration increases.
On Wednesday, January 7th, NumbersUSA mailed a letter to President-elect Barack Obama urging him to make Americans and already-resident legal immigrants his top priority. In the letter, we urged Obama to temporarily suspend the importation of most foreign workers, chain migration and the visa lottery. Also, we urged him to fully fund E-Verify and make it mandatory for all employers. If you haven't taken action to support American workers, now is the time! If you haven't done so already, please join more than 138,000 members and sign the petition to support American workers. Also, check your action buffet for faxes to send to your elected officials. Read the letter!
John Fanestil, a United Methodist minister, is one of several activists who say they are determined to "use the park for its intended purpose." Even as the construction project marches toward the sea, Fanestil holds Communion at the fence every week, passing a chalice of wine over or through the barriers.
"There is no accountability and no check on the power of Homeland Security," he told me as we hiked to the fence. "What they're doing here is almost punitive."
