Immigration and Customs Enforcement Assistant Secretary Julie Myers has stepped down according to a statement released by Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. Her resignation is effective Nov. 15.
"Under Julie's leadership, ICE has undertaken exceptional law enforcement operations with unprecedented results. She has instituted and overseen several key law enforcement programs that have dramatically enhanced the department's efforts to curb illegal immigration and ensure strong enforcement of customs laws," Chertoff said in a written release.
NumbersUSA had said that defeating Proposition 202 was the most important vote of these elections. The ballot measure was pushed by Arizona businesses that wanted to make it easier to hire illegal aliens and to gut a new Arizona law that may be the toughest in the nation in keeping illegal aliens out of jobs. Prop. 202 was deceptively named the "Stop Illegal Hiring Act" even though it would have done the exact opposite. NumbersUSA thanks all of you who sent money to pay for ads to inform voters of the deception just before Tuesday.
Please sign our petition asking President-elect Barack Obama to support American workers over illegal aliens by rejecting an illegal alien amnesty.
Illegal aliens take job opportunities away from the most vulnerable Americans in skilled and unskilled positions. To force through an amnesty for illegal aliens would hurt American workers.
It is very important that you both sign the petition and ask your friends to sign it too.
With all those incumbents falling left and right, and seats changing Parties all night, it has been understandable if you feel uneasy about how we will do in the next Congress in terms of protecting American workers and communities from radical new immigration efforts.
Especially troubling has been the defeat of several of our strongest allies in both Parties.
Our preliminary assessments, however, find some reassuring signs:
CHICAGO -- Changing planes here seems an appropriate place to anticipate the results and congratulate Sen. Obama on his victory. As my readers know, I have rated most past immigration actions and campaign promises of both Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain as "bad" to "abysmal." But I feel mildly optimistic at this moment about the next Presidency.
Francesco Insolia, the former owner of a New Bedford Mass. manufacturing company, yesterday pled guilty to helping harbor and conceal illegal aliens by allowing the company to submit false Social Security numbers for employees under Federal government contracts. As part of the plea agreement, Insolia will serve a jail term of up to 18 months and pay a fine of $30,000. A worksite enforcement operation at the company last year resulted in the detention of over 361 illegal aliens.
From major elections in the Senate to a completely reshaped House of Representatives to a new White House and to important ballot initiatives, today's election will be one of the most important in recent history. And with the impact it's sure to have on immigration reform, NumbersUSA is your source for election news and analysis on how it impacts U.S. immigration policy.
Well, they did it. The Presidential candidates got to election day without disappointing The Establishment which thrives on massive foreign labor importation. No matter how much Sen. McCain and Sen. Obama talked of helping mainstreet or Joe the Plumber or the middle-class or the forgotten Americans -- and no matter how much they talked of change and shaking up the Washington establishment -- the fact is that ON IMMIGRATION ISSUES, both have reached election day with almost no veering from the status quo, fatcat, Robber Baron approach of the Establishment that drove Pres. Bush's immigration policies his first six years.
Following in the footsteps of Prince William County, Va., all persons arrested for violations of local or State law by the Manassas Police Department will have their immigration status checked beginning on Dec. 1. Officers also will be allowed to investigate the status of persons who are "lawfully detained" for local or State violations if they have "probable cause."
