The Biden administration signaled earlier this week that it plans to keep Title 42, the coronavirus border shutdown put in place under former President Trump, ending the hopes of open-border activists who expected the program to be canceled last month.
Title 42 is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention order to control the spread of COVID-19; the order allows the federal government to expel migrants caught crossing the border without authorization almost immediately.
The Biden administration had sent signals earlier this summer that it was looking to end the use of the Title 42 authority. Thankfully, the administration changed course this week as the border crisis continues to worsen throughout the summer.
Since its invocation, hundreds of thousands of migrants have been turned back within hours of illegally jumping the southern border under Title 42. Open border advocacy groups have sued the Biden Administration to end the practice, erroneously stating that it prevents migrants from claiming asylum - and thus, is illegal.
The Biden Administration carved out some caveats from the order, including unaccompanied alien minors and some family units that Mexico has now refused to allow back across the border.
