The latest U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) report shows that border apprehensions increased by 9% from last month but remains 53% lower than June 2016. CBP officials noted that since the fiscal year began in October total apprehensions have decreased by two-thirds hitting a six-year record low.
In June 21,659 border crossers were caught, up from 19,962 in May. This is a huge decrease compared to June 2016 when 45,722 border crossers were apprehended.
The number of unaccompanied minors apprehended at the border also increased from 1,480 in May to 1,961 in June. 2,322 family units were caught in June up from 1,580 in May.
Total apprehensions to date are 19% lower this fiscal year than compared to the same months in FY16.
