Since October around 40,000 families and unaccompanied children have been caught at the border, hitting record highs for these winter months. December alone has seen the highest numbers in one month since the 2014 border surge.
In December 9,000 family members were caught along the border, which is a 38% increase from November. Around 6,800 unaccompanied minors came across the border, a 21% increase from November.
These numbers are staggering considering that the weather during these months makes the journey across the border more dangerous usually slowing down the border traffic. According to Border Patrol interviews the illegal aliens say they are coming across because they believe that the Obama administration will allow them to stay in the U.S. permanently.
Supposedly in an effort to curb the border crossings Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson issued deportation raids on families and children who crossed illegally in the 2014 border surge and have been ordered deported by an immigration judge.
So far though the raids have only detained 121 people, about one-tenth of one percent of the more than 100,000 illegal aliens that were part of the 2014 border surge. Only 77 of the 121 detainees have been deported according to ICE and at least 12 have received stays of deportation.
