Reports indicate splinter groups from Central American caravan reached Tijuana over the weekend. Yesterday some identified as caravan members by the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) climbed the fence and sat on top of it. Others jumped to the ground or crawled through fence openings but returned to Mexican soil when Agents approached.
CBP announced lane closures at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa ports of entry in preparation for larger caravan numbers. CBP is working with the U.S. military to install port hardening infrastructure and equipment along the border between legal crossings. The later involves installing concertina wire, jersey barriers, barricades, and fencing. The hardening materials will remain in place for an indefinite period.
In a statement CBP said, “officials in charge at our local border crossings must always maintain security while we work to efficiently process legitimate trade and travel into the U.S. The materials will be used to help strengthen border security, to ensure the safety of the American people, the traveling public, CBP personnel and the communities in which we serve.”
