During a Facebook Live event on Sunday night Gov. Greg Abbott (R-Texas) signed a bill banning sanctuary jurisdictions in the state of Texas. Texas is the first state to ban sanctuary cities.
The bill will restrict cities, counties, and universities from prohibiting their local law enforcements agents from asking about a person’s immigration status and enforcing federal immigration law.
The bill will also impose a civil and criminal penalties on any government official or law enforcement officer who refuses to cooperate with federal immigration authorities or enforce federal immigration laws. The bill would fine the government entities up to $25,500 per day they are in violation.
"As Governor, my top priority is public safety, and this bill furthers that objective by keeping dangerous criminals off our streets," Abbott said in a press release. "It's inexcusable to release individuals from jail that have been charged with heinous crimes like sexual assault against minors, domestic violence and robbery."
The new law will go into effect on Sept. 1, 2017.
