After reaching a 17- year low in April border apprehensions have made a 60% increase over the summer, in opposition to historic trends that usually see a reduction in the late summer months. This increase comes as talks about granting amnesty for Dreamers has made national headlines.
According to the latest USCIS report, 30,567 border crossers were caught in August, up from 25,025 in July. The number of unaccompanied minors (UACs) apprehended at the border also increased from 2,481 in July to 2,994 in August. 4,645 family units were caught in August up from 3,389 in July.
While the Trump administration officially ended the DACA program at the beginning of the month Pres. Trump has voiced his support for granting amnesty to the nearly 800,000 illegal aliens enrolled in the program. He even met with Democratic leaders Sen. Schumer and Rep. Pelosi to supposedly iron out an amnesty deal.
On top of this a number of Republicans have sided with the Democrats in putting forth legislation to grant amnesty to DACA recipients and allow them to sponsor their family members for citizenship.
In July Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) introduced their new version of the DREAM Act that broadened DACA and would grant amnesty and work permits to nearly 2 million illegal aliens.
As soon as the Trump administration announced the ending of DACA, Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) said he would file a discharge petition that would force action on his proposal that would stop deportation proceeding on DACA recipients for three years. After talking with his colleagues and was promised that a solution would be found he decided to not file the petition.
The latest bill comes from Republican Sens. Thom Tillis (N.C.), James Lankford (Okla.), and Orrin Hatch (Utah) who put forward the Succeed Act. This bill would grant millions of illegal aliens amnesty without providing any enforcement measures to prevent future amnesties.
In the past when any amnesty deal is being discussed including DACA, DAPA, and Gang of 8 major border surges happened as illegal aliens gained confidence in being allowed into the United States.
