July Border Apprehensions at Nearly 200k

Published:

The Department of Homeland Security released official border statistics for the month of July, and apprehensions approached 200,000 with Border Patrol agents making 199,777 arrests. The number of apprehensions is more than 5 times the number of apprehensions from just a year ago and more than double the number from the same month during the 2019 border surge.

In June, apprehensions were 178,549.

Apprehensions of UACs and family units drove July's record numbers. Border Patrol agents made 18,689 apprehensions of UACs, just 30 apprehensions shy of the all-time record set back in March of this year. The number of family units increased by 50% in July compared to June. Border Patrol agents apprehended 76,056 family units compared to 50,049 in June.

The increase in both UACs and family units is likely due to the Biden Administration's application of Title 42 expulsions -- immediate removals because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Biden Administration has exempted UACs from Title 42 expulsions, and Mexico refuses to accept family units that are turned away under Title 42, forcing them to remain in the United States.

In total, DHS recorded 212,672 encounters of inadmissibles in July. That number is comprised of both apprehensions and inadmissible individuals attempting to enter a port of entry.
