Report: HUD Proposal Would Ban Illegal Aliens From Public Housing

Published:

The Daily Caller reports the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) will propose a rule that stops illegal immigrants from using loopholes to obtain public housing. Millions of citizens are currently waiting for assistance so the rule is expected to free up housing units they can use.

Although current law bans non-citizens from public housing, illegal aliens have been able to game the system by living with family members, usually children, who are U.S. citizens. And previous Administrations ignored the presence of these so-called “mixed families.”

The Caller reports HUD will propose a rule in the next few weeks that would ban any illegal alien from living in public housing, irrespective of whether they are a direct beneficiary. Under the rule, HUD would check beneficiaries for eligibility using the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program. Those found to be ineligible will be required to leave. If they refuse, the entire family will be forced out.

The effort is part of President Trump’s “Buy American, Hire American” policy which, among other things, seeks to reserve public benefits and American jobs for citizens and legal residents. One official told The Caller, “This proposal gets to the whole point Cher was making in her tweet that the President retweeted. We’ve got our own people to house and we need to take care of our citizens. Because of past loopholes in HUD guidance, illegal aliens were able to live in free public housing desperately needed by so many of our own citizens. As illegal aliens attempt to swarm our borders, we’re sending the message that you can’t live off of American welfare on the taxpayers’ dime.”
