On Monday, a large group illegally crossed the southern border into the United States at El Paso, Texas and attacked Border Patrol agents. One individual in the group was carrying a giant Venezuelan flag.
Bill Melugin and Adam Shaw of Fox News reported:
[Border Patrol] said one of the protesters assaulted an agent with a flagpole while another threw a rock at agents, injuring one in the process. That in turn led Border Patrol to initiate crowd-control measures.
"These measures included the use of the authorized less-lethal force pepperball launching system," the statement said. "The crowd then dispersed and returned to Mexico."
Part of the incident was recorded on video.
This incident comes on the heels of an announcement by the Biden Administration that it was going to use Title 42 to essentially restart “Remain in Mexico” for some Venezuelan asylum seekers. Though, it became clear that this was an attempt to manage the influx in such a way to reduce the numbers being processed – and mostly released – by Border Patrol each day
Melugin and Shaw further report:
There were more than 227,000 migrant encounters in September, taking the total number for fiscal year 2022 to more than 2.3 million – a new record high. The administration says it has seen a decrease in the number of Venezuelan crossings in the immediate weeks after the new enforcement operation was put into place.
