Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) joined his fellow Republicans, Senators Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz, in warning President Obama against the use of executive action on the issue of immigration. In a press conference held on Thursday, Speaker Boehner said a unilateral action by the president would "poison the well and there will be no chance for immigration reform moving in this Congress".
Instead of executive action, Speaker Boehner indicated that he will push for a legislative solution in the House.
"I want to talk to our members about how to move forward, but I've made my position very clear. It is time for the Congress of the United States to deal with a very difficult issue in our society. This immigration issue has become a political football over the last 10 years or more. It's just time to deal with it."
Although no specific details were given about what a House immigration bill would contain, Speaker Boehner did say the only reason that the Republicans didn't address immigration reform earlier this year was because of the border surge.
"What held us back last year was a flood of kids coming to the border because of the actions of the president that had already taken place."
