Tibetan Spiritual Leader, the Dalai Lama, expressed concern for the ongoing refugee situation in Europe in a recent interview. The Dalai Lama, a refugee himself, said that there are too many refugees in Europe to be supported, and, while they should be allowed to stay temporarily, the goal should be to help them return them home some they can help rebuild their home countries.
The statements from the popular religious leader is similar to the position of NumbersUSA that the United States should help fund safe zones close to the refugees homes, so they can one day return.
"There are too many [refugees] at the moment," the Dalai Lama said in the interview. "From a moral point of view too, I think that the refugees should only be admitted temporarily...The goal should be that they return and help rebuild their countries."
This is not the first time the Dalai Lama has spoken out against the massive wave of refugees coming from Syria. In Sept. 2015, while on a visit in the U.K., he cautioned, "You have to consider many factors, whether you can take care of these people...You have to be practical... It's impossible for everyone to come to Europe."
The Dalai Lama advocated for a solution to help these countries so that the refugees could return and stop the flow of people leaving these countries.
"Taking in a few thousand refugees is wonderful but in the meantime you have to think about a long term solution too -- through development and education in these Muslim countries."
Pres. Obama has said he wants to permanently resettle at least 10,000 Syrian refugees in the U.S. this year. The Obama administration has shortened the Syrian refugee screening process from 18-24 months to just 3 months in order to reach this goal, despite the warning from the FBI Director, James Comey, about the U.S.'s ability to thoroughly screen the Syrian refugee applicants for terrorist ties even through the lengthy 18-24-month process.
