During Wednesday’s Commander-in-Chief Forum Donald Trump said that he is open to granting amnesty to illegal aliens who plan on joining the military or are currently serving in the U.S. military. Trump said that this would be a “very special circumstance” and they would have to be carefully vetted but could be granted legal status.
Trump’s response came from a question asked by former Army Captain Sue Fulton. She asked if he believed if an illegal alien who servers or wants to serve in the U.S. military, “deserves to stay in this country legally?”
“I think that when you serve in the armed forces, that’s a very special situation, and I could see myself working that out, absolutely,” Trump replied.
Host Matt Lauer clarified asking Trump if this would extend to anyone who plans on serving not to just those who are currently serving under DACA.
“I think the military is a very special thing, if they plan on serving, if they get in, I would absolutely hold those people,” Trump responded. He followed up by saying, “We have to vet very carefully, I think everybody would agree with that, but the answer would that it would be a very special circumstance, yes.”
In 2014 the Obama administration announced the Military Accessions in the National Interest, or MAVNI program, which allowed illegal aliens who qualified for DACA to enlist in the military. Rep. Gosar has recently introduced legislation to reverse this policy.
