The Dept. of Justice released their first report showing the number of foreign-born inmates incarcerated in federal U.S. prisons and their immigration status. This quarterly report was mandated by Pres. Trump in his Jan. 25 interior enforcement executive order.
Currently the DOJ does not have a process in place to collect immigration status information from convicted aliens in state prisons or local detention centers. In order to fulfill the President’s quarterly request they only included the information from the Department’s Bureau of Prisons (BOP), which only looks at federal prisons.
The report shows that as of March 25, 2017 there were 45,493 foreign-born inmates in BOP custody. Only 3,939 or 8% of those are U.S. citizens.
The report also details the immigration status of the other 41,554 incarcerated illegal aliens.
Nearly 54.2% of these illegal aliens have been issued final deportation orders. 33.4% are under ICE investigation for possible removable while 12.3% have pending ICE investigations where a decision has yet to be reached. Only 0.1% or 26 have been granted relief due to asylum claims.
“Illegal aliens who commit additional crimes in the United States are a threat to public safety and a burden on our criminal justice system,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions said about the report. “This is why we must secure our borders through a wall and effective law enforcement, and we must strengthen cooperation between federal, state and local governments as we strive to fulfill our sacred duty of protecting and serving the American people.”
