The Trump Administration announced today that the government will not renew Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for the country of Honduras, giving Hondurans until January 5, 2020 to make arrangements to leave the U.S. and return to their home country.
Honduras first received TPS status in 1999 after the country was hit with a major hurricane. The country’s TPS status was first extended in 2010.
DHS permitted a 6-month extension of Honduras' TPS status last November in order to make "an appropriately deliberative" decision regarding conditions in Honduras. Since then, the department has determined that disaster-related conditions have improved to a point where TPS status is no longer necessary and will allow an 18-month period for Hondurans to make preparations for their return.
Under the TPS designation the foreign national is protected from removal and granted a work permit allowing them to compete with American workers for jobs.
