Rep. Gosar Introduces Legislation to Block In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) has introduced legislation that would block states from giving in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens. Under federal law, it’s illegal for states to grant a benefit to illegal aliens that can’t be accessed by all U.S. citizens, but still, a number of states have passed laws that allow illegal aliens to receive the in-state tuition benefit.

States have taken advantage of a loophole by passing legislation that requires students to have graduated from a high school within the state. The laws don’t explicitly block U.S.-citizen students from other states, but by requiring students to have graduated from a high school within the state, the laws indirectly block the benefit from U.S.-students from other states.

Rep. Gosar’s bill would close the loophole exploited by the states.

“It is despicable that taxpayer funded institutions are blatantly ignoring the law and putting illegal aliens ahead of American students,” said Congressman Gosar. “American students should not be cut out of opportunities being offered to illegal aliens. Closing this loophole would ensure that American students are provided the same opportunities and benefits that are granted to illegal aliens.”

H.R. 1190 has 7 original cosponsors, including Reps. Brian Babin (R-TX-36), Andy Biggs (R-AZ-05), Scott DesJarlais, (R-TN-4), Jeff Duncan (R-SC-3), Steve King (R-IA-04), Mark Meadows (R-NC-11), and Randy Weber (R-TX-14).
