Over 172,000 aliens were encountered by Customs and Border Protection officers in March of 2021. This represents an increase of nearly 72% in just one month - and a whopping 450% increase since March 2020.
168,195 aliens were arrested by the Border Patrol as they were encountered illegally attempting to enter the United States; the remaining 4.136 aliens were found to be inadmissible and denied entry at designated ports.
In total, 172,331 aliens were encountered as part of the continuing surge at the Southern Border, according to data recently released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
For some context, in just the first six months of FY2021, more migrants have been encountered by USCBP than in the entirety of FY2020.
The Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Troy Miller, attempted to excuse the negligence and failings of the Administration by stating:
CBP has experienced an increase in encounters and arrests. This is not new. Encounters have continued to increase since April 2020, and our past experiences have helped us be better prepared for the challenges we face this year.
The now tiresome defense from the Administration is wrong; surges like this do not occur every year. They are driven by continual promises of amnesty, expansion in low-skilled visa programs, and additional magnets offered by the Biden Administration.
CBP reports 168,195 aliens apprehended after attempted illegal entry through Mexico in March 2021; this number is a 450% increase from the 30,389 aliens arrested in March 2020. Additionally, the 168,195 aliens apprehended last month is still an 81% increase compared to the beginning of the 2019 border surge, which saw 92,833 aliens arrested in March 2019.
Last month, agents apprehended 18,663 Unaccompanied Alien Children (up from 9,271 in Feb.), 52,904 Family Unit Aliens (up from 19,286), and 96,628 Single Adults (up from 68,992).
The nearly 19,000 UACs are the largest monthly number ever recorded for that category, toppling the previous highs of 11,475 in May 2019 and 10,620 in June 2014.
In total, encounters in March 2021 reached a 15-year high.
