The Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, admitted that over 12,000 Haitian migrants camped under the international bridge in Del Rio, Texas, have been released into the United States; Mayorkas added that more might follow.
In an interview with 'Fox News Sunday," Mayorkas said that there were approximately 12,400 Haitians released from the makeshift migrant camp after claiming asylum in the U.S., they are now awaiting the extremely drawn-out process of having their cases heard by an immigration judge; in addition, another 5,000 Haitian migrants are being processed by DHS, and another 3,000 are being detained.
Mayorkas added during the interview:
[The number released] could be even higher. The number that is returned could be even higher. What we do is we follow the law as Congress has passed it. We will make determinations whether they will be returned to Haiti based on our public health and public interest authorities.
Mayorkas was also visibly uncomfortable when pressed by Fox News anchor Chris Wallace who offered the Secretary data from his own Department showing what Wallace called the "flood" of illegal immigration only getting worse under the Biden Administration.
"I wouldn't call it a flood," Mayorkas responded.
The New York Post reports, "Many of the migrants being released into the U.S. may have coronavirus because the Biden administration is not requiring them to be tested or be vaccinated after they enter the U.S. illegally."
According to United States Justice Department estimates, about 44% of migrants released to await their immigration court date will miss their immigration court appearances.
Reports now state that before the camp was cleared last week, up to 30,000 migrants had crossed the southern border and huddled under the international bridge. According to Fox News, "the U.S. deported about 2,000 of the migrants in flights to Haiti and roughly 8,000 voluntarily returned to Mexico."
After Mayorkas attempted to convince Chris Wallace that he had not only ordered but effectively stopped migrants from entering the U.S. - "We did. We encountered them as they gathered in that one section in Del Rio, Texas," - Wallace asked the Secretary why a "wall or fence" was not erected to uphold U.S. immigration law? Mayorkas responded:
It is the policy of this administration: we do not agree with the building of the wall. The law provides that individuals can make a claim for humanitarian relief. That is actually one of our proudest traditions.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has been forced to protect his state and constituents from the willful immigration failures of the Biden Administration, followed the Secretary on "Fox News Sunday." Gov. Abbott accused the administration of "dereliction of duty:"
The United States Constitution itself requires that the president and that the federal government secure the sovereignty of the United States of America, including the states in the United States of America, and the Biden administration has abandoned any pretense of securing the sovereignty of either Texas or the United States by having these open border policies that you so well articulated.
They have created a magnet that led to these massive groups of Haitians, as well as the other groups, that are coming here for one reason, and that's because they have sent a message and a signal to the entire world that they are not going to secure the border, they're going to allow them across.
