The number of illegal alien encounters decreased slightly in July 2022 compared to June. Despite this, the fiscal-year-to-date illegal alien encounter total (October 2021-September 2022) is set to surpass two million for the first time in recorded history.

In total, USCBP encountered 199,976 illegal aliens in July 2022. This total represents a 3.8% decrease in total illegal alien encounters compared to June 2022. For context, in July 2021, CBP encountered 213,593 total illegal aliens; and in July 2019, during the ‘19 border surge, CBP encountered just 81,777 total illegal aliens.

In July, U.S. Border Patrol apprehended 181,552 aliens attempting to cross the southern border illegally. This represents a 5.6% decrease compared to the previous month (192,418 aliens).

Single alien adults comprised 125,713 of total encounters made by the U.S. Border Patrol in July. Border Patrol also encountered 42,811 family units and 13,028 unaccompanied alien children after they made illegal attempts to cross the southern border.

The Office of Field Operations reported an additional 18,424 illegal aliens encountered at U.S. ports of entry. This difference represents an 18.7% increase compared to June (15,515).

Single alien adults comprised 8,649 of total encounters made by the Office of Field Operations (OFO) in July. OFO also encountered 9,229 family units, 271 unaccompanied alien children, and 275 accompanied alien children attempting to enter the U.S. illegally through designated ports of entry.

The Wall Street Journal also reports that “migrants from countries other than Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador accounted for more than 40% of total apprehensions at the southern border so far this fiscal year.”

Breitbart News adds:

In a year-to-year comparison, agents apprehended nearly 201,000 in July 2021. This represents a nearly ten percent drop from last July. However, when compared to July 2020’s 38,536 apprehensions (the last year of Trump administration policies), This July’s apprehensions represent an increase of 371 percent.

With two months to go in the current fiscal year, Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 1.8 million migrants. This compares to the 1,659,206 for the entire Fiscal Year 2021. A year-to-date comparison shows an increase of more than 42 percent from last year’s nearly 1.3 million apprehensions through the end of July.
