California has issued over one million driver’s licenses to illegal aliens currently residing in the state, according to a new report by the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
Illegal aliens have been allowed to apply for and receive state driver’s licenses since 2015 when then-Gov. Jerry Brown signed Assembly Bill 60, “The Safe and Responsible Drivers Act.”
According to DriveCA, the bill was intended to facilitate illegal aliens in getting to work, driving their kids to school, and running everyday errands without facing the fear of their immigration status coming to light should they get pulled over.
Luis Alejo, author of the bill in 2013 and then-Democrat assemblyman, stated, “The legislation is “working the way it was intended to and has dramatically improved the lives of a million immigrants and their families. Immigrants are getting tested, licensed, and insured and this is making our roads safer for everyone.”
The licenses issued to California’s illegal aliens “have a visible distinguishing feature and cannot be used for certain federal purposes,” reported The Sacramento Bee. This means that aliens with state IDs will not be able to access restricted federal areas, not be able to pass TSA or vote.
Ten other states — Colorado, Hawaii, Vermont, New Mexico, Maryland, Illinois, Delaware, Washington, Nevada, and Connecticut — along with Washington, D.C., also allow illegal aliens to apply for ID if they can provide specific documentation like a foreign birth certificate, passport, or consular card.
