Howard County, Maryland is growing fast, and immigration is part of the reasons why. This is leading to the overcrowding of public schools in the county, leading to a redistricting plan unpopular with many residents there.

Reducing traffic emissions won't get any easier with 400 million Americans

A New York Times report has sparked a national discussion about traffic emissions. To be effective, concerned parties must pay attention to both individual consumption and the number of individual consumers. Inevitably, that will mean challenging Congress' immigration policies.

Immigration may explain the media's blind spot on population

To acknowledge the elephant in the room, mainstream media will have to venture outside its comfort zone on immigration. The destruction of ecosystems often occurs around heavily populated cities and is closely related to the increase in the number of Americans.

Fewer flocks and feathers grace our skies, forests, coasts, grasslands, and deserts these days. That's not just a coincidence. As human population increases and millions of acres of natural lands and habitats are permanently altered or lost to development, the survival of our avian neighbors is threatened.

For those who care about the consequences of U.S. carbon emissions, it matters a great deal whether the U.S population remains at 330 million, or is pushed by immigration to more than 400 million by 2060, and more than 500 million (half a billion) by 2100. It also matters that, by settling in the United States, immigrants, on average, increase their carbon emissions by 400 percent over those of their countries of origin.

Around the time of the first Earth Day in 1970, when there were 130 million fewer Americans than at present, environmental scientists, activists and even politicians were outspoken and unequivocal on the threat posed by a growing U.S. population. Yet neither the Trump administration nor its harshest environmentalist detractors are willing to recognize or resolve the greatest threat to all wildlife in the United States: large-scale habitat loss from incessant U.S. population growth.

How Much Nature Should America Keep?

We lose a football field worth of nature every 30 seconds in the United States. We add an NFL football stadium worth of people every ten days. You don't have to be an environmental scientist or demographer to see the connection. Even with our efforts to reduce our individual footprints, our collective feet are stomping out the natural world beneath us.

If you were to poll average Americans as to what the most important natural resource is that sustains contemporary civilization, you’d probably get responses such as oil, soil, or water. And each of these would be good answers. For each of these substances is absolutely crucial in sustaining not just our standard of living but our very survival, as are many other renewable and non-renewable natural resources.

The United States is in overshoot and will never get out without reducing immigration. The United Nation's latest projections suggest that "the United States is estimated to grow from 329 million people in 2019 to 434 million people by the end of the century, with most of that projected increase owing to migration."

Wisconsin's Recent Response to Population Growth Ignores Immigration Impact

Wisconsin appears to be on the verge of joining 17 other states that allow motorists to drive on highway shoulders in order to reduce congestion during peak travel times. This "solution" reminds me of the story about the guy who came home to discover that he left the water running in a sink and attacks the problem with a mop and bucket instead of shutting off the water, in this case the "water" being population growth that is 88 percent fueled by immigration.

For the eighth year, NumbersUSA's top staff is working our big booth at the world's largest Earth Day exhibition at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas. While hundreds of environmental groups, corporations, educational institutions and research facilities tell their stories, NumbersUSA reminds attendees about the main reason why the sustainability goals of the first Earth Day in 1970 still haven't been met -- massive population growth forced by congressional immigration policies.

Unsustainable Population Increase

Immigration into the United States fluctuated throughout the 20th century because of varying economic conditions. But the changes made by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 drastically increased the number of immigrants allowed into the United States. The chart below depicts the increase in population per decade during the 20th century with a brief description below of how immigration numbers affected the growth.

Great Britain's Office for National Statistics has released new information that reveals that the nation's population will exceed 70 million people by the year 2027 and grow to more than 73 million within 25 years. The Office says new immigration and children born to new immigrants will contribute to 68% of the population growth.

Fully addressing the immigration debate without discussing today's non-traditional immigration numbers and asking whether they are sustainable is impossible. Yet Congress rarely talks about the immigration numbers, partly because the mainstream media does not analyze immigration from a sustainability perspective.

GREENSPACE VIDEO ON EARTH DAY CRISIS -- When do we stop allowing immigration to destroy a million acres a year?

No, I'm not suggesting that immigrants deliberately or inadvertently destroy more green space than U.S.-born residents. In fact, each immigrant on average destroys a bit less. But the numbers of immigrants (4 times the traditional average) are resulting in the clearing, scraping and developing of nearly a million additional acres of natural habitat and farmland every year. Is this not a crisis demanding urgent attention on this week of the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day?

Our Water Supply, Down the Drain

Since California's last major drought ended in 1992, the state's population has surged by a staggering 7 million people. Some 100,000 people move to the Atlanta area every year. Over the next four decades, the country will add 120 million people, the equivalent of one person every 11 seconds.
