Union Leaders

Traditionally, the union movement strongly supported every legislative initiative in Congress to restrict immigration enforce existing immigration laws. Movement leaders knew that fluctuations in union membership were inversely related to prevailing immigration trends. Today, the AFL-CIO has turned its back on U.S. workers by endorsing illegal immigration & open borders.

On Labor Day, a top union leader asked voters to "call out" corporations that ship jobs overseas. But how is that any more harmful to U.S. workers than when unions lobby to bring more foreign workers into this country to take more U.S. jobs?

Unions Stand to Gain Strength From Legalization Efforts

For most of their history, labor unions opposed attempts at loosening immigration laws and often threw their weight behind restrictionist measures. During the most recent overhaul effort in 2007, a schism among unions cracked an otherwise willing liberal coalition and helped defeat the reform bill. But now, in the wake of Arizona’s strict and highly controversial new immigration law, labor has united to support immigration reform with unprecedented vigor.

The Battle of the Mimes looks pretty silly in many ways. But beneath the makeup and balloons, the SEIU's "silencing campaign" on Sunday showed a lot about the ability and willingness of one of the biggest money/muscle partners of the pro-amnesty forces to use well-orchestrated intimidation to keep debate from happening. Perhaps surprising was that the main intent was not so much to silence me but to silence their pro-amnesty marchers. Once the Park Police finally required that the marchers be given the right to speak to us, we could see why SEIU didn't want them to be heard. Pretty radical stuff . . .

Charles' blog raises even more questions about why the SEIU is fighting so hard for illegal foreign workers while its current union members find it so hard to keep their jobs in the face of foreign labor competition. The SEIU led the way last week in sponsoring the pro-amnesty march in Washington and in attacking NumbersUSA's freedom of speech and mobility.
