Two enterprising Reuters reporters tracked down a few of the recently-fired illegal Chipotle restaurant workers who admitted that they committed identity theft and/or fraud to land a job at the fast-food chain. Since illegal employment and identity theft have been linked before, these confessions aren't surprising. What the fired workers told reporters next, however, is more newsworthy.

Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.) has introduced a bill that would increase border security and strengthen interior enforcement. The Keeping the Pledge on Immigration Act of 2011 (H.R.1274) requires the Administration to deploy national guard troops to the border and includes the CLEAR Act that requires cooperation between the federal government and state and local law agencies in the enforcement of immigration laws.

Gary Miller (R-Calif.) has introduced the Loophole Elimination and Verification Enforcement (LEAVE) Act, H.R.1196, which is a comprehensive immigration enforcement bill that would require the use of E-Verify for all employers nationwide, end the practice of birthright citizenship, prohibit states from granting in-state tuition benefits to illegal aliens, increase the number of border patrol and immigration and customs enforcement agents, and assist local municipalities in the enforcement of federal immigration laws, among other things.

“No Exit From a Bad Program” (editorial, Feb. 28) claims that the Secure Communities program is problematic because it results in the arrest and deportation of illegal immigrants with little or no criminal record. Such a view is misguided and dangerous.

Secure Communities is the Department of Homeland Security’s comprehensive strategy to improve the identification and removal of criminal aliens from the United States.

Business Owner to Serve 10 Months in Prison After Hiring Illegal Aliens

The president of a Southern California furniture manufacturer has been sentenced to 10 months in prison and fines totaling $15,000 for hiring illegal aliens and then obstructing police during the investigation. Rick Vartanian, president of Brownwood Furniture, pleaded guilty to the charges.

13 States Urge Supreme Court to Uphold Arizona E-Verify Law

A coalition of 13 states has asked the Supreme Court to uphold an Arizona law that would suspend the business license of any company found to knowingly hire illegal aliens. The Supreme Court will hear arguments in December. Business groups are appealing a lower federal court's ruling that upheld the law.

Federal Appeals Court Blocks Pennsylvania Illegal Alien Enforcement Law

The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has blocked an illegal immigration enforcement law passed by Hazleton, Pa. that would have prevented companies that hire illegal aliens from obtaining a business license and fined landlords who rent to illegal aliens. The ordinance was passed four years ago and inspired similar legislation across the country.

Fewer day laborers on Phx. streets

Day laborers, mostly illegal immigrants from Mexico, also had proliferated in other areas of metropolitan Phoenix, including Guadalupe, west Phoenix and Fountain Hills.

But drive by any of those locations now, and only a handful of day laborers are left. And no longer do they rush up to vehicles en masse, waving their hands in a desperate bid to get hired. Now, they are more likely to keep a lower profile, leaning against a tree or sitting on a milk crate.

Opinion on Virginia immigration checks was a matter of duty

When a Virginia legislator asks for my office's official opinion on a matter of law, I answer it. I am obliged as attorney general to do so. I do not choose the timing of a request as it relates to court rulings in Arizona or crimes committed by illegal aliens in Virginia. The fact that there was a request would seem to indicate that there was a need for clarification.

Missouri sheriffs' group endorses immigration enforcement efforts by border states

Missouri sheriffs are giving their support to law officers in states along the Mexican border seeking to enforce immigration laws.

The Missouri Sheriffs' Association this week approved a resolution backing states that have approved their own legislation on immigration enforcement. The resolution specifically mentions Arizona, where part of a new law on the subject has been blocked by a federal judge.

DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano announced on Tuesday morning that the Department has deployed its "Secure Communities" program to all 25 counties located on the Southwest border with Mexico. The "Secure Communities" program allows Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to root out criminal illegal aliens incarcerated in local jails.

Norco City Council Members voted, 4-0, to support a resolution that backs Arizona's immigration enforcement law. Norco Mayor Malcolm Miller did not attend the meeting. The Council also discussed a possible E-Verify ordinance that would require all the city's businesses to check new hires through the worker verification system.

Federal Judge Susan Bolton ordered an injunction today of Arizona’s immigration enforcement law, formerly known as SB1070, just hours before it’s scheduled to take effect. Supporters of immigration enforcement are angry and frustrated over the ruling, but there is hope in the halls of Congress – of all places. If Congress passed the SAVE Act and CLEAR Act, these two bills together would secure the border, mandate E-Verify nationwide, and provide local law enforcement officials with the tools to help federal officials enforce immigration laws obviating the need for SB1070.

Fate of Arizona Law Still in Hands of Federal Judge

U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton has still not issued a ruling on a motion by the federal government to suspend Arizona's immigration enforcement law while the case is being litigated in federal court. The law is supposed to take effect on Thursday, July 29, but the Justice Department is challenging the law's constitutionality, saying it oversteps federal authority.
