HR Consultant: Companies Should Adopt E-Verify Before it's Mandatory

Published:

Human Resources (HR) consultant David Creelman suggests that it will be easier and cheaper for companies to implement E-Verify at their own pace rather than wait for a federal or state mandate. Creelman said that E-Verify is “a sensible system that is neither difficult nor expensive…[and] will help ensure you hire eligible and documented workers.”

Creelman is CEO of Creelman Research, which “helps HR leaders to identify, understand and address important new issues in human capital management.” In a blog posted on HRCloud, he says it “pays to be proactive” even if an E-Verify mandate is not imminent.

He wrote “E-Verify will help ensure you hire eligible and documented workers. It will benefit you in the long-run to make E-Verify a standard part of your recruiting/onboarding process—so why not get started now? Far better to get moving on this implementation so that you can do so at your own pace, and fit it into your own schedule, then to scramble to meet a legislated deadline.”

Creelman said it shouldn’t be hard for HR departments to get company management to “buy in” because management understands the political climate and the need for compliance. They will appreciate that E-Verify reduces the risk of penalties. And staff probably won’t need a consultant to lead them through the E-Verify implementation process because “it’s simple enough that most HR professionals can manage without outside help.”
