Published:

Length:  3 min 39 sec

On July 19, 2012, the House Judiciary Committee asked DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano about the administration's DREAM Act executive amnesty. Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.), who chairs the Immigration Subcommittee, asked Sec. Napolitano how many illegal aliens would receive work permits while millions of Americans were out of work. He had to ask the questions four times before getting an answer. Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith asked Sec. Napolitano if students who qualify would have to provide a certified school transcript. She said, they're "still working on the details."

In a New York Times op-ed entitled “Fix Immigration. It’s What Voters Want” Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., argues President-elect Trump “has a clear mandate not only to stop illegal immigration, but also to finally cut the generation-long influx of low-skilled immigrants that undermines American workers.” He says the nation needs an immigration policy that focuses less on powerful special interests and more on everyone else.

“Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 178,000” in November 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This number is generally reported as the number of new jobs added to the U.S. economy in a given month, though we pointed out in October how this is misleading when not put in the context of how much the working-age population grew during the same time.

Speaker Ryan: 2016 Agenda Excludes Immigration Limitations

Breitbart News reports on Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo’s interview with House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., during which he admitted immigration limitations are not part of the 2016 Republican job-centric “pro-growth” agenda. “We’re not going to be talking about visa caps in our agenda,” Ryan said. This runs contrary to recent Pew polling which found that 67 percent of Republican voters want immigration reduced while only seven percent want more.

A federal district court denied an injunction request by technology workers under President Obama’s guest-worker program for spouses of H-1B visa workers. The plaintiffs, Save Jobs USA, said citizens would lose out jobs to the new guest workers but Judge Tanya Chutkan denied them an injunction, saying plaintiffs could not demonstrate the guest workers would directly compete with them for jobs. The merits of the case have yet to be decided.

President Obama has proposed unilateral changes in the L-1B visa program that would bring in hundreds of thousands of new foreign guest workers that would compete with or displace American tech workers. As for jobless Americans, I suppose the answer is: Let them eat pie, or let them eat when there is a bigger pie. If Illegal Aliens are Already Citizens, then Joe Biden is Already President

Vice President and potential presidential candidate Joe Biden gave a speech last week in which he said the 11 million illegal aliens in the United States “are already Americans.” Famous for pandering to audiences and, uh, stretching the truth, Biden also has been a champion for causes irrespective of whether they are consistent with U.S. laws or the Constitution. So if he’s misguided enough to think illegal aliens are citizens, perhaps one day Biden will dispense with the formalities of an election and declare he’s already president. Or at least the comic-in-chief.

There are many admirable standards proposed at the House Republican retreat today.  But too many are clearly against the interests of too many Americans.  And although the leaders declare that the purporse of immigration policy is to promote the national interests, much of the text seems to tie the national interest primarily to what the Republican leaders' corporate donors want rather than protecting the ability of unemployed Americans to gain jobs and of working Americans to obtain raises for their productivity.
