Employment Screening Firm Lists E-Verify as a Top Ten Trend

Published:

The use of E-Verify as an employment screening tool topped the list of the Employment Screening Resources second annual top ten trends list. ESR is a human resources consulting firm providing pre-employment screening reports to Employers, Human Resources and Security departments. E-Verify didn't make the first list of top ten trends last year, but increased government regulation was cited as a cause for the workplace verification tool making the list in 2009.

Lobbyists Pressing U.S. House Today to Allow Stimulus Recips to Hire Illegal Aliens

When it comes to immigration, we are living in a Wild West culture in which the outlaws feel free to strut down the street and demand that the authorities give them whatever they want. Witness Capitol Hill today. The lobbyists for a variety of industries that hire lots of illegal foreign workers are rallying their troops to phone U.S. House leaders; they hope to strip a provision of the giant stimulus bill that would require recipients to use E-Verify to keep illegal aliens from getting the new jobs. Will the good "townspeople" cower behind their curtains, or get out in the streets and insist that the House "sheriffs" run the bandits off?

SC County Official Endorses E-Verify

Published:

New South Carolina legislation requires all businesses with more than 500 employees to begin checking and verifying new hires through E-Verify. Although smaller entities don't have to begin using the verification tool for at least another six months, Pickens County is requiring that all new county employees be verified, and the county's human resource director has given a strong endorsement.

New Sen. Gillibrand May Be NY's Top Democratic Champion for the Unemployed (supports keeping illegal aliens out of U.S. jobs)

No Democrat in New York's large congressional delegation has shown more promise in truly bringing relief to the unemployed, especially in her approach to immigration issues. After only one term in the U.S. House, we still have a lot to learn about Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). On many immigration issues related to the welfare of American workers, she did not take a stand. But when she did take a stand, it was generally good -- earning her a respectable B Immigration-Reduction Grade from NumbersUSA.

Jack Kingston successfully added another amendment that would require any contractors awarded work through stimulus money verify the employment eligibility of their workers through E-Verify.

RI Lawmakers Beef Up Immigration Proposals

Rhode Island State Representative Jon Brien is strengthening an immigration reform proposal for the state assembly. Rep. Brien's proposal has passed the Rhode Island House in the previous two years before stalling in the General Assembly. But this year's bill expands the mandatory use of E-Verify from state agencies and vendors to private businesses.

Stiffer Immigration Laws Take Effect in Missouri

Published:

New immigration laws went into effect in Missouri at the start of the new year, requiring all public employers in the state to use E-Verify. Private businesses are still not required to use the Department of Homeland Security's workplace verification tool unless they hold a government contract worth more than $5,000, receive state loans or have been caught hiring illegal aliens.

Critics: Why require E-Verify?

Published:

That E-Verify already is entrenched in the industry that lured foreign laborers to Nebraska has critics questioning why the state would spend resources to make the program mandatory. They also cite the system's error rate and the risk of discrimination.

Even supporter Gary Mickelson, a Tyson spokesman, expressed caution over expecting too much.

"It is not a catch-all," said Mickelson, whose company employs about 8,000 in Nebraska.

Urge the Senate to Extend E-Verify

Published:

Last week the Department of Labor issued a grim report on the state of jobs in America. More than 500,000 Americans lost their job in November and more than 2 million so far in 2008. In response, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Lamar Smith (R-Texas) issued a statement urging the Senate to pass a long-term extension of E-Verify. Take action now by calling and/or faxing your Senator and asking them to add an amendment to the auto industry bailout to attach H.R. 6633.

Napolitano Should Bring Arizona Mandatory E-Verify To National Level

The apparent choice of Arizona Gov. Napolitano to be Pres. Obama's head of Homeland Security is a very mixed signal. But Napolitano has witnessed how a mandatory workplace verification law in her state has performed like a charm with no significant disruption of the state's businesses. She should make her DHS job a lot easier by persuading Obama to endorse Rep. Shuler's (D-N.C.) SAVE Act which essentially would make the Arizona law a federal law.

Federal Contractors Must Use E-Verify Starting 1/15/09

Contrary to its name, "The Stop Illegal Hiring Act," Proposition 202 abolishes the use of E-Verify in Arizona and requires the state to wait for the federal government in actions against employers.

Fraudulent Arizona Prop. 202 Would Enable, Not Stop, Illegal Hiring

Published:

An initiative on the Arizona ballot for November 4 – Proposition 202 or the so-called Stop Illegal Hiring Act – does the exact opposite of what it claims. It would gut Arizona's strong employer sanctions law and allow illegal-alien employers to return to "business as usual." Should this state initiative pass, it will have adverse national implications. The group Vote No on Prop. 202 is raising funds to oppose this fraud on the voters.

Bail-Out Crisis Holds Lessons for Delay in Immigration Solutions

(PLUS, WHY DID THE HISPANIC CAUCUS & THE IMMIGRATION REFORM CAUCUS COMBINE TO DEFEAT THE BAIL-OUT?) The Bank Bail-Out Crisis should teach us two very important things relevant to the immigration debate: (1) Not all economic growth is good (that is, it doesn't necessarily serve the public good). (2) It's a whole lot less painful to act when a problem is festering than after it becomes a full-blown crisis. To avert immigration crisis in the future, this was the year to pass the SAVE Act (Rep. Shuler's H.R. 4088) and finally start our immigration mess on the road to recovery. Extreme partisan politics kept it from coming to the floor for a vote where it most surely would have passed overwhelmingly.

Congress Recesses after Passing Short-Term E-Verify Extension

Published:

On September 27, the Senate cleared a Continuing Resolution (CR; H.R. 2638) that, among other things, extends the E-Verify program through March 6, 2009. The inclusion of a short-term E-Verify extension in the CR was a bittersweet development. Although E-Verify will survive for four more months, the reauthorization battle will need to be fought all over again with a new President in the White House who may or may not support the program.

E-VERIFY WILL DIE IF CONGRESS DOESN'T ACT THIS WEEK: Central tool in fight against illegal immigration is in Sen. Reid's hands

Senate Majority Leader Reid has two honorable choices: (1) Bring Sen. Menendez's backroom filibuster to the Senate floor for a vote. If he does this, there easily will be the 60 votes necessary to stop Menendez and allow a vote to pass H.R. 6633 (a clean E-Verify reauthorization). (2) Avoid a vote altogether by talking to Menendez privately, persuading him that what he is doing is threatening the reputation of the Democratic Party just before elections and get him to withdraw his "hold" on H.R. 6633.

In a wide-ranging interview, Wicker said he disagrees that babies born in the United States to parents who are in the country illegally should automatically become American citizens.

In a related press release, Sen. Grassley noted "Congress is running out of time to reauthorize and even enhance E-Verify. If this program expires, it gives employers even greater opportunity to hire illegal aliens…It's time for the Majority Leader to act and ensure this tool is available for employers who want to do their part to comply with the law."

The NumbersUSA Capitol Hill Team has been told that Sen. Menendez (D-N.J.) has put a "hold" on legislation to reauthorize the E-Verify workplace verification program. That means the Senate is barred from voting to keep it alive. Without a vote, E-Verify will die in November.

More Agricultural Entities Using H-2A Guestworker Program

Published:

Stepped-up federal immigration enforcement efforts are causing farmers and growers to use the H-2A guestworker program more, the Seattle Times reports. The H-2A program allows agricultural employers to hire foreign workers if the state work force agency certifies no citizens or legal immigrants are available to do the work. Unscrupulous farmers and growers that had being using illegal alien labor now fear getting caught in the enforcement web, so they are turning to the legal alternative that had been there for them all along.
